Chapter 6 - What Chloe Heard.

Claire covered her mouth when she read the sentence.
Alex crouched beside Chloe.
"When did Grandma say that?"
Chloe twisted the hem of her floral dress.
"Lots of times."
Alex felt his stomach turn.
"What exactly did she say?"
Chloe looked toward Claire as if asking permission to answer.
Claire nodded.
"You can tell us anything."
The girl took a breath.
"Grandma said Mommy doesn't like the Mercer family."
"She said Mommy wants to take me somewhere Daddy can't find us."
Claire closed her eyes.
Alex kept his voice calm.
"Did Mommy ever tell you that?"
"No."
"Did Grandma tell you not to tell us?"
Chloe nodded.
"She said it would make you fight."
Alex sat back on his heels.
Evelyn had not only been building a case around Claire.
She had been planting fear in Chloe.
Claire knelt beside her daughter and rested one hand on the floor.
"Listen to me, sweetheart."
"You never have to keep a grown-up's secret when the secret makes you scared."
Chloe leaned into her.
"Are we leaving Daddy?"
"No."
Alex answered at the same time.
Chloe looked between them.
Alex reached out and touched her shoulder.
"Mom and I make decisions together."
"Grandma does not decide where you live."
"Grandma does not decide what our family is."
Chloe nodded, but she did not look convinced yet.
That frightened Alex more than he wanted to admit.
After Claire took Chloe upstairs, Alex called Martin again.
He asked one question.
"Can my mother use anything Chloe says in a trust dispute?"
Martin's answer was immediate.
"Not in the way she appears to be planning."
"But Alex, document everything."
"Not for revenge."
"For clarity."
Alex photographed Chloe's drawing and saved copies of the security logs.
He exported the pantry recording to two encrypted drives.
Then he noticed a folder on Evelyn's abandoned iPad account that had synchronized briefly before he removed her access.
The folder was named FAMILY NOTES.
Most files were locked.
One was not.
It was a spreadsheet.
Alex opened it.
Rows of dates filled the screen.
Claire misses school fundraiser.
Claire argues about holiday schedule.
Claire refuses Palm Beach trip.
Claire leaves dinner early.
Claire questions trust spending.
Claire seeks medical attention during hosted dinner.
The last line had been added today.
Beside each entry was a column labeled WITNESS.
Alex scrolled.
Several names matched the guests from the dining table.
His mother had been documenting ordinary disagreements as though they were evidence in a trial.
Then he reached a line dated six months earlier.
CLAIRE DISCOVERS DANIEL LETTER.
Alex stopped breathing for a second.
His father had been dead five years.
"What letter?"
Claire was standing behind him.
She had come downstairs without him hearing.
Alex turned the laptop toward her.
She stared at the entry.
"I don't know."
"I've never seen a letter from your father."
Alex looked back at the screen.
The witness column contained only one name.
EVELYN.
The location column read STUDY SAFE.
Alex stood.
His father's old study had been locked since the funeral.
Evelyn always claimed she kept it that way because she could not bear to see the room changed.
Alex had respected that grief for five years.
Now he crossed the hallway and stopped in front of the dark walnut door.
The brass key was not on his key ring.
Claire looked at him.
"Your mother kept that key too, didn't she?"
Alex remembered the ring Evelyn had dropped on the dining table.
He returned to the table and turned the keys over one by one.
The smallest key was old brass.
It fit the study door perfectly.
The lock opened with one quiet click.
Inside, dust covered everything except the safe beneath Daniel Mercer's desk.
May you like
The safe handle was clean.
Someone had been using it.
