Chapter 10 - The Locked Gate.

Alex did not open the front door.
He spoke through the gate intercom instead.
"Why is there a locksmith with you?"
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
"Because you changed access codes to trust property without authorization."
The locksmith shifted uncomfortably beside her.
Alex's voice stayed calm.
"The police are not here."
"There is no eviction order."
"There is no court order."
"There is no emergency authorization."
"You are not coming inside."
Evelyn's eyes flashed.
"This house belongs to the trust."
"Not for much longer under your administration."
The locksmith leaned toward Evelyn.
His voice was audible through the intercom microphone.
"Ma'am, you told me the residents had abandoned the property."
Claire looked at Alex.
Evelyn did not answer the locksmith.
Alex did.
"We live here."
"Our six-year-old daughter is asleep upstairs."
The locksmith immediately picked up his tool case.
"I'm leaving."
Evelyn turned on him.
"You have already been paid."
"Refund me tomorrow."
He walked back to his van.
The gate camera captured every second.
Alex saved the recording.
Evelyn remained under the porch light beyond the gate.
"You think a few videos make Claire innocent of everything?"
Claire stepped beside Alex.
"Innocent of what?"
Evelyn looked toward her through the camera.
"Of turning my son against me."
Claire's face went still.
"I spent five years trying not to."
That answer seemed to surprise Evelyn.
Claire continued.
"I invited you to holidays after you insulted me."
"I brought Chloe to your house after you criticized how I parented her."
"I stayed quiet when you entered our home without calling."
"I told myself peace was more important than being respected."
Alex looked at Claire.
The words echoed his father's letter.
Evelyn heard it too.
"Daniel poisoned you against me from the grave."
Alex's expression changed.
"You knew about the letter."
Evelyn's silence confirmed it.
"You found it in the safe, didn't you?"
"Your father was ill when he wrote it."
"He was clear enough to document the trust transfer."
Evelyn stepped closer to the camera.
"Everything I did was to protect what he built."
"By hiding the transfer?"
"By risking this house?"
"By planning a sale behind my back?"
Evelyn's composure cracked.
"Because you would have said no."
Alex stared at the screen.
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not confusion.
She had bypassed him because she believed his consent was optional.
"Go home," he said.
Evelyn's voice shook with anger.
"You will regret choosing her over your own mother."
Alex glanced toward Claire.
"This isn't a choice between two women."
"It's a choice between control and my family."
He ended the intercom call.
Evelyn remained at the gate for another minute.
Then she returned to her car and drove away.
Sandra exhaled.
"She will not stop."
Martin's name appeared on Alex's phone before he could answer.
Alex picked up.
"I filed the emergency trust notice," Martin said.
"The bank froze all transfers."
"Good."
"There is something else you need to know."
Alex closed his eyes.
"What now?"
"Evelyn sent an email to the entire charity board twenty minutes ago."
"She says Claire had an emotional episode tonight and that you removed your mother from the house under her influence."
Claire gave a humorless laugh.
"She wrote the public version already."
Alex looked at Sandra.
May you like
Sandra lifted her phone.
"Then maybe the truth needs witnesses too."
