Chapter 8 - The Reserve Account.

By midnight, Alex's dining room had become an evidence table.

The cream envelope sat beside Daniel's letter.

Two laptops were open.

Printed bank statements covered the place settings where Evelyn's guests had eaten hours earlier.

Claire's injured hand rested against a pillow while she worked with her left.

Alex hated that she was still helping.

He hated even more that she seemed accustomed to solving problems while hurt.

Martin joined them by video call.

"The reserve account is legitimate," he explained.

"The transfer may not be."

"Evelyn created the account as part of a possible renovation project."

"There was never a renovation."

Alex scanned the statement.

"Where did the money go after that?"

"It has not left the reserve account yet."

Claire looked up.

"Yet?"

Martin nodded.

"There is a pending wire scheduled for tomorrow morning."

The receiving institution belonged to a private real-estate holding company.

Alex recognized the company name.

Redwood Property Partners.

One of the dinner guests, Stephen Cole, was a senior partner there.

Alex remembered him leaving the house without meeting his eyes.

"She had the buyer sitting at our table."

Claire's voice was barely above a whisper.

Martin shook his head.

"Possibly."

"We do not know that Stephen knew what she was planning."

Alex called him anyway.

Stephen answered after four rings.

His voice sounded strained.

"Alex, I was hoping you would call."

"Were you buying my house?"

Silence.

"Not your house exactly."

"Evelyn approached us about purchasing a trust-owned residential property with a leaseback option."

Claire stared at Alex.

A leaseback would allow them to remain in the home while someone else owned it.

At least until the new owner ended the lease.

Alex spoke slowly.

"Did she tell you I approved the sale?"

"She said you were aware and that tonight's dinner was to finalize family consent."

"I never consented."

Stephen exhaled.

"Then I am canceling the transaction."

"Immediately."

A minute later, Martin confirmed that the pending wire had been blocked.

Alex should have felt relief.

Instead he felt the outline of the plan becoming clearer.

Evelyn intended to make Claire look unstable.

She intended to delay Alex's control of the trust.

She intended to sell the house into a company transaction before anyone challenged her authority.

Then she would present the sale as a practical response to family instability.

Claire looked at him.

"Why would she want the house sold so badly?"

Alex did not know.

Martin did.

"There may be a tax issue."

He shared a document on screen.

Three years earlier, Evelyn had used the house as part of a broader trust valuation when securing a line of credit for a failed commercial investment.

The investment had lost money.

The line of credit was coming due.

If the house sold quickly, the debt could be settled without public attention.

Alex stared at the numbers.

"She risked our home to cover an investment she never told me about."

Martin nodded.

"That is what the records suggest."

Claire leaned back.

The evening's cruelty suddenly had a financial shape.

Evelyn had not needed Claire to be gone forever.

She had only needed Claire to look unstable long enough for Alex to sign.

A frightened child, an injured wife, a tense dinner, and carefully chosen witnesses could all be turned into a story about a chaotic household.

Then Alex remembered something.

"The guests."

"She needed them to repeat her version later."

Claire looked toward the empty chairs.

"Unless one of them saw too much."

Alex thought of the woman who had left last.

Sandra Bell, Evelyn's oldest friend, had paused in the hallway with her phone in her hand.

At the time, Alex assumed she was calling a driver.

Now he opened his messages.

A new text had arrived from an unknown number.

Alex, this is Sandra.

I did not know what Evelyn was doing until tonight.

I recorded part of the dinner because I was worried about Claire.

You need to hear it before your mother does.
