Chapter 9 - Sandra's Recording.

Sandra arrived at the house at 12:37 a.m.
She wore the same navy coat from dinner and carried her phone in both hands.
Her face looked tired and ashamed.
Alex let her in without speaking.
Claire sat at the kitchen island with a cup of tea she had barely touched.
Sandra stopped when she saw the bandage again.
"Claire, I'm sorry."
Claire's expression remained guarded.
"What are you sorry for?"
Sandra swallowed.
"For staying at that table."
"For hearing what I heard and telling myself it was family business."
Alex pulled out a chair.
"Show us the recording."
Sandra unlocked her phone.
"I started recording at six fifteen."
"Evelyn had been talking about you before Claire came back from urgent care."
She pressed play.
The audio began with forks against china and low conversation.
Then Evelyn's voice rose clearly above the room.
"Claire has become increasingly unreliable."
Someone asked whether Alex knew.
"He is protective of her," Evelyn replied.
"That is why tonight has to be handled carefully."
Another voice asked what would happen if Alex refused to sign the trust amendment.
Evelyn answered without hesitation.
"Then he will see what instability looks like with his own eyes."
Claire's hand tightened around her cup.
Alex stared at the phone.
The recording continued.
A guest asked why Claire was not at the table.
Evelyn said she had hurt herself in the kitchen after becoming overwhelmed.
That was at 6:18.
Claire had not returned from urgent care yet.
Evelyn was already describing the event as proof of instability.
Sandra paused the audio.
"That is when I realized something was wrong."
"She was too prepared."
Alex nodded for her to continue.
At 6:31, the sound of the side door opening could be heard.
Claire's voice entered faintly from the kitchen.
Then Chloe started crying.
Sandra's phone captured Evelyn leaving the table.
A minute later, her voice carried from the kitchen.
"Stop crying."
"Your mother has already delayed this dinner enough."
Then came the line that made Claire close her eyes.
"Neither of you sits down until my guests have been served."
Alex's jaw tightened.
Sandra stopped the recording.
"I should have gotten up."
"I should have gone into the kitchen."
Claire looked at her for a long moment.
"Yes."
Sandra nodded, accepting it.
"I know."
"That is why I came back."
She handed Alex the phone.
There was one more clip.
It had been recorded after Alex arrived.
The image showed Evelyn near the front hallway as guests gathered their coats.
She was whispering to Martin.
"Do not let him see the property schedule."
Martin stepped away from her.
"I'm not hiding anything from my client."
Evelyn's expression sharpened.
"Then you are no longer useful to me."
The clip ended.
Alex handed the phone back.
"Will you provide this to Martin?"
"Yes."
"And if necessary, will you say what you heard?"
Sandra nodded.
"Yes."
Claire stared into her tea.
"Why now?"
Sandra's eyes filled.
"Because Evelyn has always been controlling."
"But tonight I watched her turn a child's fear into part of a business plan."
"I can no longer call that loyalty."
A car door slammed outside.
Everyone turned toward the front windows.
Headlights swept across the wall.
Alex checked the security monitor.
Evelyn stood at the front gate.
May you like
She was not alone.
Beside her was a locksmith.
