Chapter 4 - The Cream Envelope.

Alex did not touch the envelope immediately.

Claire stared at it as if she had never seen it before.

Evelyn noticed.

A thin smile appeared at the edge of her mouth.

"Go ahead."

"Ask your wife why she met with an attorney without telling you."

Claire looked at Alex.

"I did meet with an attorney."

Evelyn leaned back in satisfaction.

Alex kept his eyes on Claire.

"Why?"

"Because I was trying to protect Chloe and myself if your mother kept escalating."

"From me?"

Claire's voice softened.

"No."

"From the pressure around us."

She finally opened the cream envelope.

Inside was a draft family asset agreement.

Alex recognized Martin Hale's letterhead, but not the document.

The first page listed the Mercer Family Trust.

The second page proposed temporary control of several accounts if Alex became unavailable due to travel, illness, or business emergency.

The proposed temporary trustee was Evelyn Mercer.

Alex's eyes narrowed.

"This isn't Claire's agreement."

Claire turned pages quickly.

Her name appeared in three places.

Next to each was a blank signature line.

Evelyn folded her hands.

"You were going to discuss it tomorrow."

"That is what Martin came here for tonight."

Alex looked toward the front door where the attorney had left minutes earlier.

"You invited my lawyer to dinner so I would sign trust papers?"

"I invited people who care whether this family survives your wife's moods."

Claire flinched.

Alex noticed.

Evelyn continued.

"Claire has threatened to take Chloe and leave twice this year."

"That is not true."

Claire's voice was immediate.

"I said I would take Chloe to my sister's for a few days if your mother kept coming into our house without warning."

Alex turned another page.

Attached to the trust amendment was a typed summary titled FAMILY STABILITY CONCERNS.

It listed incidents involving Claire.

Missed charity dinners.

A disagreement at Chloe's school.

A canceled vacation.

Today's urgent care visit was already included.

Alex read that line twice.

"How is this in a document printed before dinner?"

Claire leaned over his shoulder.

The note read: Claire became distressed while preparing a routine meal and required medical attention after mishandling kitchen equipment.

Her face drained of color.

"She planned the explanation before I was hurt."

Evelyn's composure cracked.

"That page was updated this evening."

Alex looked at the footer.

The document timestamp said 4:12 p.m.

Claire had not reached urgent care until after four.

Alex took out his phone and called Martin.

The attorney answered on the second ring.

"Alex, I was about to call you."

"Did you write the family stability summary?"

Silence.

"No."

Evelyn looked away.

Martin continued.

"Your mother sent me a packet yesterday and said you had requested a trust review."

"I didn't."

"I figured that out when I saw Chloe in the kitchen."

Alex's voice went flat.

"Who drafted the amendment?"

"My office created a generic template months ago during estate planning."

"The version at your house tonight isn't ours."

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"Then who changed it?"

Martin sighed.

"Alex, there is something else."

"Your mother asked me this afternoon whether a temporary trustee could restrict distributions to a spouse who was considered financially irresponsible."

The room felt suddenly colder.

Evelyn reached for her handbag again.

Alex moved the bag away from her.

"Your key."

This time she removed it.

The brass key landed on the table beside the cream envelope.

"You think Claire won tonight," Evelyn said.

Claire stared at her.

"This isn't a game."

"It became one when you started separating my son from his family."

Alex stepped closer.

"Claire is my family."

Evelyn's eyes moved toward the staircase where Chloe had disappeared.

"And what happens when she takes your daughter away?"

Alex's expression hardened.

"You don't get to use Chloe to frighten me into giving you control."

Evelyn took her coat.

At the doorway, she stopped.

"Fine."

"Ask Martin who owns the house you're standing in."

The front door closed behind her.

Alex looked at Claire.

Neither of them spoke.

Then Martin's voice came through the phone.

May you like

"Alex."

"Your mother is not bluffing about the house."
