Chapter 2 - Forty-Two Missing Minutes.

The kitchen clock read 7:18 p.m. when Alex locked the front door.

Evelyn stared at him as if the simple click of the deadbolt were a personal insult.

"You are behaving irrationally."

Alex did not answer.

He set Chloe on a chair beside Claire and filled a clean bowl with cool water.

The berry-colored stains began to loosen from Chloe's fingers.

Underneath them, the skin was angry and tender but not badly damaged.

Claire watched him examine each hand with a care that made her eyes fill again.

"It was cranberry glaze," she said quietly.

"The pot tipped when she tried to lift it."

Alex looked at Chloe.

"Did it spill on you?"

Chloe nodded.

"Grandma said I had to keep holding it because the guests were waiting."

Evelyn gave a sharp laugh from the dining room.

"She held a warm pot for seconds, Alex."

"Stop talking."

The words were quiet.

That made them land harder.

Alex rinsed Chloe's hands and wrapped them loosely in cool cloths.

Then he turned to Claire.

"Show me yours."

Claire hesitated before lifting her bandaged hand.

"Urgent care already dressed it."

Alex's head snapped up.

"You went to urgent care today?"

"At four."

"Why didn't you call me?"

Claire looked toward Evelyn.

"Because your mother took my phone while I was being treated."

Evelyn's face hardened.

"Your battery was almost dead."

Claire did not look away.

"You told the nurse my husband was in an investor meeting and should not be disturbed."

Alex took out his phone and opened the security settings.

The deletion log showed exactly forty-two minutes missing from the kitchen camera.

The gap began at 5:58 p.m.

It ended at 6:40 p.m.

The deletion itself happened two minutes later.

Alex tapped the administrator record.

A device name appeared.

EVELYN-IPAD.

The room became very still.

Evelyn folded her arms.

"I deleted a private family disagreement."

"You deleted evidence from my house."

"Evidence of what?"

Alex looked toward Claire.

She unwrapped one edge of the gauze just far enough to show a patch of treated skin near her palm.

She did not dramatize it.

She did not need to.

"At five fifty-five, Evelyn told me to take the roasting tray out because her guests were arriving early."

"There were oven mitts in the drawer."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Evelyn spoke over her.

"She misplaced them."

"I found them later in your tote bag."

Alex turned slowly toward his mother.

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

Claire continued.

"She told me to use a folded towel."

"The towel was damp from the sink."

"When I grabbed the tray, the heat came through immediately."

Alex closed his eyes for one second.

"And Chloe?"

"She saw me drop the towel and started crying."

"Evelyn told her to stop making a scene and help carry the soup instead."

Evelyn stepped forward.

"That is not what happened."

Chloe's voice came from behind Alex.

"Yes, it is."

Everyone turned.

The little girl was staring at her grandmother with both hands held against the cool cloths.

"Mommy said her hand hurt."

"Grandma said nobody was leaving the kitchen until dinner looked perfect."

Evelyn's color faded.

Alex reopened the security application.

"Deleted footage isn't always gone."

"The system backs up to the cloud."

Evelyn's eyes flicked toward the ceiling camera.

"Not if the backup window was disabled."

Alex froze.

He had not told her about the backup window.

Claire saw it too.

"How do you know that?"

Evelyn looked from Claire to Alex.

For the first time, she had no immediate answer.

Alex opened the settings panel.

Cloud backup had been disabled at 5:57 p.m.

One minute before the missing footage began.

The change had come from the same iPad.

Alex stared at the screen.

Then another notification appeared.

PANTRY CAMERA OFFLINE - LOCAL STORAGE ACTIVE.

He looked toward the narrow pantry door at the far side of the kitchen.

The main camera had been erased.

But someone had forgotten there was a second one.
