"Why was it wrong?"

Claire saw several jurors write down the answer.
After three weeks of evidence, the case went to deliberation.
Daniel offered a last-minute plea that would reduce his exposure if Claire supported leniency.

Claire did not answer the emotional claim.

The jury returned the following afternoon.
Daniel stood while the foreperson read guilty findings on the central fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and obstruction counts.
Claire felt no triumph, only the release of a pressure she had carried so long that its absence seemed unfamiliar.

Claire gave them one sentence.
