Chapter 9 - The Price of the Cookbook.

Claire refused to let Adrian trade himself for the cookbook.

Adrian refused to pretend the choice belonged only to him when the evidence involved his father's death.

Their disagreement unfolded quietly in Rebecca's office, where rain tapped against the windows and federal agents mapped Daniel's possible locations.

The hospital bracelet in the photograph came from the maternity center Claire planned to use.

Someone had accessed her patient file and copied her admission schedule.

The breach meant Daniel still had help outside Marcus Venn's network.

Nora suspected Dr. Howard Lane, the physician named in the fabricated guardianship petition.

Lane had no role in Claire's care, yet hospital logs showed his credentials opening her record seventeen times.

When questioned, he claimed Daniel hired him to provide a second opinion about Claire's stress.

He denied sharing the bracelet or falsifying any report.

Then investigators found a payment from Larkspur Family Services deposited into his consulting company.

Lane agreed to cooperate after learning the guardianship plan could cost him his license and freedom.

He revealed that Daniel wanted Claire admitted for observation during the baby's delivery so an emergency petition could transfer decision-making authority to him.

The plan depended on a staged psychological evaluation and statements describing Claire as irrationally afraid.

"Every time I cried, he was building a case," Claire said.

Rebecca answered carefully.

"He was trying to build one, but evidence can expose the difference between distress and incapacity."

Lane also provided the address where Daniel asked him to deliver medical forms: an abandoned chapel outside the city.

Agents prepared surveillance while Claire recorded a message accepting Daniel's demand.

Adrian would appear to arrive alone, carrying a drive supposedly containing access to his father's files.

Claire objected to using him as bait until Adrian reminded her that Daniel already viewed everyone as an object in a transaction.

"The difference is that I am choosing this."

The operation began after midnight.

Adrian entered the chapel while officers watched from concealed positions and Claire monitored from a secure vehicle with Nora.

Daniel appeared near the altar holding the cookbook, but Paul remained hidden in the balcony.

Daniel demanded the drive and insisted Adrian confess on camera that the debt was fabricated.

Adrian placed the drive on a pew without approaching.

"Give Claire her mother's book."

"Claire gave up her rights when she chose you."

From the vehicle, Claire heard the sentence and finally understood that Daniel could not imagine protection without ownership.

Paul emerged above them and accused Daniel of planning to leave him with every criminal charge.

The two men argued, each revealing fragments the other had tried to conceal.

Paul admitted forging manifests, while Daniel admitted targeting Claire because of Evelyn's files.

Their microphones captured everything.

When officers announced themselves, Daniel threw the cookbook toward a candle stand and ran through the sacristy.

Adrian reached the book before the flame caught its cover.

Paul surrendered, but Daniel escaped through a maintenance tunnel built beneath the chapel decades earlier.

The ankle monitor found near the exit had been cut from a convincing silicone replica rather than from Daniel's body.

He had never worn the actual device after court.

Inside the recovered cookbook, Evelyn's code identified accounts controlled by senior figures across three companies.

One entry belonged to a trust created in Adrian's name when he was nineteen.

Claire watched his face as he realized someone had used his identity for years.

At the bottom of the final page, Evelyn had written a warning.
