Claire demanded to leave for her sister's apartment, but Elena gently explained that the photograph could be old, staged, or designed to draw her into another trap.
Adrian did not order Claire to stay.
Instead, he placed his phone on the table and asked her to choose whether Elena should contact the police, a private investigator, or both.
"Both."
The answer came from Claire with more strength than she expected.
Her sister, Maya, was a public-school counselor who answered late-night calls from frightened students and never ignored Claire for more than an hour.
The disconnected number and the photograph were enough to strip away every comforting explanation.
Elena contacted Detective Nora Hayes, an investigator already assigned to the fraudulent shipping case.
Nora confirmed that Maya had reported someone following her two days earlier, but Daniel had persuaded her not to make a formal complaint.
Claire stared at the message until the letters blurred.
"He knew she was afraid and told me nothing."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"He needed you isolated."
Security footage from Maya's apartment showed her leaving voluntarily with Daniel's chief financial officer, Paul Mercer.
Paul carried no visible weapon, yet he held Maya's phone and kept one hand on her shoulder as they entered a gray SUV.
The vehicle was registered to a shell company tied to Bennett Maritime.
Nora obtained an emergency location request while Adrian's analysts traced a toll payment to an unfinished riverside condominium project.
Claire recognized the address as a property Daniel claimed had been sold months earlier.
She insisted on going with them, but the physician warned that stress had elevated her blood pressure.
"Maya went because of me."
"Going into danger won't help her," Adrian replied.
"And waiting here won't make me less terrified."
He studied her for a long moment before agreeing to let her travel in the command vehicle with Elena and the physician, far from the entry team.
The decision belonged to Claire, but every precaution belonged to Adrian.
Rain continued over the river as police surrounded the dark construction site.
Inside the vehicle, Claire listened to clipped radio updates and watched Adrian stand beside Nora beneath the unfinished concrete awning.
No swagger or anger appeared in his posture.
He handed authority to the detective and followed her instructions exactly.
Officers found Maya in a furnished model unit on the seventh floor, physically unharmed but locked inside without her phone.
Paul Mercer had vanished through a service corridor minutes earlier.
When Maya reached the vehicle, Claire pulled her into a careful embrace and apologized until both women cried.
"Daniel said you had been arrested," Maya whispered.
"He said signing temporary guardianship papers was the only way to protect the baby."
Claire felt the child move beneath her palm.
"Did you sign anything?"
"No."
Maya had stalled by demanding to speak with an attorney, and that refusal had given police enough time to arrive.
She also remembered hearing Paul argue with Daniel over speakerphone.
Daniel had promised to transfer money after landing, but Paul accused him of planning to abandon everyone involved.
Adrian asked Maya's permission before recording her account.
She agreed and revealed one more detail: Paul had repeatedly mentioned a blue ledger hidden in Daniel's lake house.
The ledger supposedly contained the real ownership records for the phantom cargo companies.
Claire knew the lake house well because Daniel had forbidden her from visiting during the renovation.
Before they could leave, Elena received an alert from the airport.
Daniel's jet had diverted before reaching Miami.
Its transponder went silent over Tennessee, and the official passenger list showed a name that made Claire's blood turn cold.
