Daniel's broadcast spread faster than the evidence disproving it.
He spoke softly, wore no tie, and presented himself as a frightened husband pleading for the return of his pregnant wife.
Claire recognized the performance because he used the same trembling voice whenever an argument reached the point where facts no longer protected him.
He accused Adrian of coercion, claimed the debt was fabricated, and displayed edited messages that made Claire appear confused and dependent.
Rebecca urged Claire not to answer him through social media.
Instead, they arranged a supervised interview with Nora present and released the original messages through the court filing.
The interview showed Claire speaking calmly in a neutral office, free to leave, with Maya seated beside her.
She described the forged documents without attacking Daniel's character.
"I am not missing, and I am not asking to be rescued by the man who left me on a runway."
The sentence became the first part of her story that strangers repeated accurately.
Meanwhile, Marcus Venn arrived at Adrian's hotel, claiming he wanted to explain the ledger.
Security stopped him in the lobby and notified Nora.
Marcus surrendered two phones but insisted Daniel had framed him.
He admitted approving unusual transfers, yet claimed he believed they funded confidential acquisitions authorized by Adrian.
Adrian listened from across the interview table with no visible reaction.
"You used my authorization code."
"Daniel gave me documents bearing your signature."
"You have known my signature for eleven years."
Marcus looked away.
Nora presented the attempted database access, restaurant footage, and encrypted messages recovered from Daniel's accountant.
Marcus finally admitted that he had helped hide early losses to protect the company from embarrassment.
One concealed report led to another until Daniel controlled enough evidence to ruin him.
"I never agreed to involve Claire or her child."
Claire answered from the observation room through the intercom.
"You don't get credit for disapproving after you built the road he used."
Marcus closed his eyes because the truth left no comfortable place to look.
He offered to identify Daniel's second aircraft and offshore accounts in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.
The aircraft was registered through a medical transport company and was heading toward the Bahamas.
Nora coordinated with federal authorities, who issued a lawful order preventing the plane from leaving United States airspace.
But flight records revealed Daniel was no longer aboard.
He had disembarked near Nashville and placed a paid actor wearing his coat on the second flight.
Daniel remained somewhere within driving distance of Chicago.
The realization changed the hotel's atmosphere.
Security found a service badge missing from a contractor's locker and a camera disabled near the staff elevator.
Adrian moved Claire, Maya, and the medical team to a secure penthouse accessible only through a coded lift.
Claire refused to be hidden without knowing the plan.
Adrian showed her the exits, introduced every guard, and gave her the code rather than keeping it for himself.
"I protect what is mine," he said, then corrected himself when he saw her expression.
"That came out wrong."
"Very wrong."
"I protect the people who have chosen to trust me."
The correction mattered more than the dramatic promise.
Late that night, Claire woke to the sound of the private elevator opening.
Adrian was downstairs with Nora, Elena was checking the hall, and Maya slept in the adjoining room.
A familiar figure stepped into the penthouse carrying flowers and wearing a hotel physician's stolen badge.
Daniel smiled as though he had merely returned home from work.
"Claire," he whispered.
