Chapter 2 - The Contract Beneath the Glass.

Warm air surrounded Claire as the sedan pulled away from the tarmac, but she could not stop shivering.
The tan leather cabin smelled faintly of cedar, rain, and the whiskey resting untouched in Adrian's hand.
He sat across from her rather than beside her, a deliberate distance that made his earlier promise feel more credible.
Claire kept one hand over her stomach while the baby shifted beneath the beige knit dress.
"Are you going to hurt me?"
Adrian set the glass into its holder before answering.
"No."
"Daniel offered me to you."
"Daniel offered property he never owned."
He slid the contract across the console and told her to read the highlighted clauses.
The language was dense, yet the meaning emerged with sickening clarity: Daniel had pledged Claire's family trust as security while falsely certifying that he controlled it.
Her late mother had created that trust to protect Claire from precisely this kind of pressure.
Daniel had spent three years persuading her that keeping financial details separate was a sign of distrust between spouses.
Now she understood that every affectionate complaint had been preparation for fraud.
"How much did he actually borrow?"
"Fifty million at first."
"And the rest?"
"Penalties, diverted cargo, and money he took from investors who trusted his reports."
Claire looked toward the rain racing backward across the window.
"Why didn't you stop him sooner?"
"I tried, but someone inside my company protected him."
The admission surprised her because powerful men rarely volunteered evidence of weakness.
Adrian explained that his legitimate investment firm had financed Daniel's expansion, only to discover phantom ships, altered manifests, and insurance claims filed against cargo that never existed.
He had demanded repayment and an independent audit.
Daniel responded by offering access to Claire's trust and arranging a flight before the auditors arrived.
"He planned to make you look responsible," Adrian said.
Claire found a page bearing a digital signature that resembled hers.
The date showed it had been executed while she was hospitalized overnight for pregnancy monitoring.
Anger finally pushed through the fog of humiliation.
"I never signed this."
"I know."
Adrian raised his phone and called a woman named Elena Ruiz.
"Ground the jet in Miami and freeze his assets."
His voice remained quiet, but the driver immediately straightened as if the temperature had dropped.
Claire watched him end the call and realized that his restraint was more intimidating than Daniel's loudest threats.
"Can you really freeze everything?"
"Not without evidence and court orders."
"Then what did that command mean?"
"It means my attorneys are filing emergency motions, my bank is preserving records, and airport security will receive a lawful request before the jet lands."
The precision of his answer eased one fear while creating another.
Daniel had always described Adrian as a reckless criminal, but the man before her spoke like someone who had prepared for every legal consequence.
The sedan entered an underground garage beneath a discreet hotel Adrian owned.
Elena waited near a private elevator with a physician, a female security officer, and a dry change of clothing in Claire's size.
No one touched Claire's belongings or asked for her phone.
Adrian remained near the car while Elena explained every option, including a separate hotel, a hospital, or transportation to anyone Claire trusted.
Claire asked to call her older sister, but the number had been disconnected that morning.
Then a message appeared from Daniel on Claire's screen.
Do not trust Vale, it read.
He will take the baby if you refuse the agreement.
Claire showed Adrian, expecting anger.
He only studied the timestamp and asked Elena to preserve the message.
"Why would he say that?"
"Because fear is the last asset he still controls."
Another message arrived before Claire could respond.
This one contained a photograph of her sister entering an unfamiliar building, followed by five words that changed the room.
