Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.
The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,
casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast
Beyond the dining room, morning sunlight poured through the open glass patio doors and flooded the modern white kitchen.
Skyley Mercer stood beside the marble island with her back straight and her scar uncovered.
Sunlight caught the scar without mercy, but Skyley no longer turned the damaged side of her face toward the wall.
Ethan's hands closed around her shoulders before she could step away.
His fingers dug through her beige cardigan as he shoved her against the glass doorframe.
"Leave the card and get out!"
Vanessa Cole froze near the refrigerator in her pale blue dress.
She had expected tears from the wife whose kitchen she had entered like a victorious guest.
Instead, Skyley's gray eyes hardened.
For eighteen months, Ethan had used the red burn scar on the left side of her face as proof that she was fragile.
That morning, it became proof that she had survived him.
Skyley struck him across the face with one clean swing and broke his grip.
Ethan stumbled against a barstool, more stunned by her defiance than by the blow.
"Don't make this harder, Skyley!"
"You made it hard when you brought her into my house."
Vanessa covered her mouth with both hands.
"Ethan told me this house belonged to him."
Skyley turned toward the white marble counter.
An Immediate Eviction Notice lay beneath a discarded gold wedding ring and a black premium credit card.
The paper carried a court clerk's stamp, a case number, and the seal of the Skyley Hale Family Trust.
"It belonged to my grandmother before I married him."
Ethan rubbed his reddening cheek and laughed.
"A piece of paper doesn't throw me out of my own home."
"The deed does."
Skyley slid the notice toward him without touching the ring.
"Your permission to occupy this property was revoked at eight this morning."
"You would have nothing without me."
The cruelty in his voice was familiar, but its power was gone.
He had said the same thing while she learned to look into mirrors after the fire.
He had said it when she returned to Hale Hearth and discovered that he had quietly taken control of her executive accounts.
He had said it every time he spent money from the black card and called it a husband's privilege.
Skyley pushed the card on top of the notice.
"That card belongs to the company audit account, not to you."
Ethan's confidence flickered.
Vanessa lowered her hands.
"You said it was unlimited."
"It was monitored."
Skyley looked directly at Ethan.
"Every hotel room, every gift, and every cash advance led me here."
He lunged for the card, but the kitchen speakers chimed before his hand reached it.
"Security protocol active," the home system announced.
The patio doors slid shut behind Skyley, and two private security officers appeared outside the glass.
Ethan stared from the guards to the eviction notice.
"You planned this."
"I survived long enough to plan it."
Skyley checked the timer on her phone.
"You have one hour to vacate."
Ethan's expression changed when her phone vibrated again.
The black card had just flagged a purchase made three nights earlier.
Twenty gallons of kerosene had been charged to Ethan at a hardware store twelve miles away.
