Chapter 8 - Smoke Behind the Walls.

Officer Ortiz wanted to surround the house immediately.

Skyley refused to let police rush a kitchen with gas lines, kerosene, and a desperate man inside.

"Ethan wants the ring because he knows about the security key," she said.

"Then we give him a copy," Nora replied.

The Hale Hearth workshop could reproduce the outer band, but not the hidden metal strip.

Skyley had the jeweler build a decoy while Ortiz obtained a warrant based on Vanessa's recording.

At 9:10 p.m., the temporary order still made Skyley the only person police could arrest merely for entering the property.

Nora warned that Graham would use any violation to validate the false psychiatric narrative.

Skyley understood the risk, but she also understood that the law moved on paper while fire moved through walls.

Ethan had arranged his trap with legal precision.

Martin Shaw, the home's security contractor, called from an unlisted number.

"Mr. Mercer forced me to surrender the local server password."

"Can he erase the kitchen recordings?"

"He erased the visible copies."

Martin paused.

"Your grandmother required a physical backup inside the walls."

The backup sat behind the brass vent above the stove, less than ten feet from Ethan.

Skyley remembered his eyes drifting toward that vent during the eviction.

He was not waiting for her to bring evidence into the house.

He was waiting for a chance to destroy evidence already there.

"Can you open the patio door remotely?"

"Not without triggering his warning."

"What about the old pantry entrance?"

Martin gave her a six-digit mechanical code installed before the smart system.

Skyley slipped away from the police staging area while Nora argued with the judge's clerk.

She left Nora a message explaining the route and activated continuous location sharing with Ortiz.

It was not a reckless return made in secret.

It was a calculated entry made before Ethan discovered the backup and before the kerosene could turn the house into a weapon.

Still, Skyley knew calculation would not protect her if he was waiting inside.

She crossed the orchard in darkness and entered through the pantry.

Smoke clung faintly to the air, although no flame was visible.

The kitchen beyond was empty.

The eviction notice still lay on the island beneath the black card Ethan believed was real.

Skyley's blue dress had been folded beside it with disturbing neatness.

"Vanessa?"

No one answered.

Skyley climbed onto the counter and removed the brass vent.

Behind it waited a heat-scarred steel box with a blinking green light.

She used the ring's hidden strip to open the box.

Inside was a memory module labeled 4:17.

The number had never referred to a date.

It was the camera channel above the stove.

Skyley slid the module into her pocket.

A floorboard creaked behind her.

Ethan stood in the doorway wearing the same dark blue shirt and holding Vanessa's burner phone.

"I knew you would come for the camera."

"Where is she?"

"Safe, until you make another selfish decision."

He locked the pantry door with his phone.

Skyley moved toward the patio, but metal shutters dropped over the glass.

Ethan placed a red fuel can on the tile between them.

"Your mother built this house to remember everything," he said.

He smiled at the scar he had helped create.

"Tonight, it forgets."
