Chapter 10 - The Vote Before Midnight.

The emergency board meeting began at 11:32 p.m. on the forty-second floor.

Graham sat at the head of the walnut table beneath a portrait of Skyley's grandmother.

Ethan stood beside him in the dark blue shirt he had worn all day.

He placed the decoy ring and black card in front of the directors.

"Skyley authorized a private transfer and then accused us when it failed," Graham announced.

Five directors looked uncomfortable.

Four looked prepared.

None asked why Graham possessed a medical affidavit he claimed to have learned about only that morning.

Skyley recognized the silence as the habit that had protected him for decades.

Skyley entered with Nora, Ortiz, and Vanessa before the security doors could close.

Vanessa wore a paramedic's blanket over her shoulders, but she walked without assistance.

Graham did not look surprised to see her alive.

That absence of surprise unsettled Vanessa more than open anger.

She realized Graham had expected Ethan's garage trap to fail and intended to blame him for it.

Ethan noticed the same thing.

The two men exchanged a glance that contained the first crack in their alliance.

Skyley saw it and decided not to let either of them repair it.

"This is a private corporate session."

"Then stop using my marriage as evidence," Skyley replied.

Nora distributed the mirrored ledgers from the black card archive.

They showed payments for the false medical reports, the illegal surveillance, and Phoenix Restoration.

Graham dismissed each page as fabricated.

Ethan held up the gold ring.

"She gave me the founder's key willingly."

"Open the vault with it."

His confidence faltered.

He inserted the decoy strip into the table terminal.

The screen flashed INVALID CREDENTIAL.

Skyley removed the real strip from beneath her watchband.

"My mother knew men like you would mistake possession for ownership."

She opened the dormant account and froze the thirty-eight-million-dollar transfer.

Applause did not follow.

Graham placed Dr. Vale's affidavit on the table instead.

"Financial access does not prove mental competence."

He played Ethan's video of the slap without the moments before it.

Director Paul Danner asked Skyley to step down until an independent evaluation could be completed.

"The evaluation was forged before the fire," Skyley said.

"That is an accusation, not a ruling," Danner answered.

The board voted five to four to suspend her as chief executive.

Graham cast the deciding vote.

Security officers moved behind Skyley.

For one terrible moment, it appeared that evidence had lost to preparation.

Then Vanessa placed the burner phone on the table.

Graham's recorded voice filled the room.

"Make sure her face is the only thing anyone remembers after tonight."

The directors stared at him.

Graham remained unnaturally calm.

"A manipulated recording from my nephew's mistress proves nothing."

Skyley connected the recovered channel 4:17 module to the boardroom display.

The first-fire video opened in silent, grainy frames.

It showed Graham entering the kitchen, kneeling behind the stove, and leaving twelve minutes before Skyley came home.

Ethan backed toward the door.

Ortiz reached for her handcuffs, but every light in the tower went dark.

Emergency power returned nine seconds later.

Ethan was gone, and Skyley's phone displayed a live feed from her house.

He stood in the white kitchen pouring kerosene across the eviction notice.
