Chapter 3 - The House That Knew Her Name.

Skyley took a screenshot before the message vanished.
Ethan watched her face and knew something had changed.
"Who contacted you?"
"Someone who remembers the fire."
Vanessa stepped away from him.
"Ethan, what did you do?"
"Nothing."
He grabbed the eviction notice and thrust it toward the sink.
The gas burner clicked alive before he reached it.
Skyley spoke one word toward the ceiling.
"Hestia."
The smart-home system shut off the gas, locked the appliance controls, and sounded a low alarm.
Ethan stared at the dark burner.
"You removed my access."
"The house recognizes its owner."
"I installed that system."
"With my money and my name on the contract."
He flung the notice across the room.
The gold ring rolled from the marble, circled twice on the floor, and stopped beside Vanessa's bare foot.
She picked it up carefully.
An engraving inside the band caught the light.
S.H. 4:17.
"What does that mean?"
"It was my mother's wedding ring before it was mine," Skyley said.
"Give it back," Ethan ordered.
Vanessa looked from him to Skyley and placed the ring in Skyley's palm.
Sirens approached from the street.
Ethan smiled for the first time since the notice appeared.
"Those are for you."
Two city police officers entered through the patio after the security guards opened the door.
Ethan immediately became soft-spoken and wounded.
He showed them the mark on his cheek.
"My wife attacked me during a mental episode."
He gestured toward Skyley's scar as if it were a diagnosis.
"She has not been stable since the accident."
Officer Lena Ortiz looked at Skyley without judgment.
She photographed the bruises forming beneath Skyley's cardigan and asked the security officers to provide independent statements.
Ethan objected that everyone on the property worked for his wife.
Ortiz reminded him that employment did not erase what a witness saw.
Vanessa began describing the shove, but Ethan interrupted until Ortiz warned him that intimidation in front of police would be documented.
For the first time that morning, he stopped speaking because someone else ordered him to.
"Did you strike him?"
"After he grabbed and shoved me."
Skyley pointed toward the ceiling camera.
"The recording is available now."
Ethan's smile tightened.
The video showed his hands on Skyley's shoulders, his shouted demand, and her single defensive blow.
It also captured Vanessa retreating when Ethan raised his hand as though he might strike her next.
Ortiz replayed that moment and marked it for the domestic violence report.
Officer Ortiz turned to him.
"You left that part out."
"She edited it."
"The timestamp is authenticated by a third-party security service."
Vanessa spoke so quietly that everyone nearly missed it.
"He told me to say she hit him first."
Ethan's head snapped toward her.
Before Ortiz could question him further, her partner handed her a newly filed order.
Ethan's attorney had found a judge after all.
The emergency petition described Skyley as dangerous, delusional, and obsessed with burning the house.
It temporarily barred her from entering her own property until a hearing in forty-eight hours.
Ethan held out his hand for the keys.
"It appears your hour belongs to me now."
Ortiz read the final page twice.
Then she looked at Skyley with quiet alarm.
The psychiatric affidavit supporting the order had been signed three months before Skyley ever filed for eviction.
