Chapter 12 - The Second Fire.

Emergency lights painted the laundry passage red.

Heat pressed through the wall while Vanessa searched for the hidden release.

"He changed the latch," she whispered.

Skyley removed the metal strip from the ring and pushed it into the old service slot.

The door opened onto a hall filled with smoke.

Vanessa wrapped the edge of her shirt over her mouth.

"The safety cabinet is across the kitchen."

"Stay behind me."

"I have spent eighteen months behind people."

Vanessa stepped beside her instead.

They entered the kitchen together.

The room looked almost peaceful above the layer of smoke.

Morning dishes still waited beside the sink, and Skyley's abandoned coffee cup remained near the window.

Ordinary objects made the danger feel more obscene.

Fire crawled across the discarded eviction notice but had not yet reached the fuel trail near the stove.

The gold wedding ring Ethan believed was genuine sat melting beside the black card.

Ethan stood near the patio doors with a fireplace lighter in one hand.

His face was streaked with soot, and his calmness was worse than rage.

"You chose her over your own life," he said.

"I chose not to become you."

Skyley moved toward the safety cabinet.

Ethan raised the lighter above the fuel.

"One more step, and the gas line goes with us."

"The deed is recorded, the ledgers are copied, and the board saw the video."

"Graham controls the board."

"Graham is using you as the last piece of evidence he can burn."

For the first time, doubt crossed Ethan's face.

Skyley pressed harder.

"He stayed in the tower while you came here alone."

"He is delaying the police."

"He is giving them time to catch you committing another fire."

Ethan looked toward the ceiling camera he had ripped from its mount.

"There is no recording."

"The house remembers everything."

The wall speaker repeated Skyley's last sentence half a second later.

Martin had restored the hidden audio backup through the security van.

Every word was streaming to Officer Ortiz.

Ethan's lighter trembled.

"You tricked me."

"You burned my face to make people doubt my mind."

"It was supposed to frighten you."

The confession escaped before he could stop it.

"Graham said a visible woman could be controlled by making her ashamed to be seen."

Skyley felt eighteen months of humiliation turn into something sharp and useful.

"You never understood what a scar does."

She took another step.

"It proves the wound closed."

Ethan dropped the lighter.

Vanessa kicked the fuel can away before it touched the flame.

The can spun across the tile and struck the island.

Ethan grabbed Vanessa and shoved her toward the burning curtains.

Skyley pulled her back, but Ethan reached the safety cabinet first.

He tore at the metal door and discovered it would not open for him.

Graham's voice suddenly came through Ethan's phone on the counter.

"Stop talking and finish it."

The kitchen became silent except for the fire.

Ethan stared at the phone, finally hearing his own disposability.

Graham continued without realizing the call was on speaker.

"If Skyley walks out, you take the fall for both fires."

Ethan reached for the phone.

The flames touched the kerosene line first.

A wall of fire rushed between him and Skyley.
