Chapter 13 - Sixty Minutes Again.

The heat threw Skyley backward against the island.

Vanessa disappeared behind a curtain of black smoke.

Ethan screamed her name, but the fire swallowed his voice.

Skyley crawled toward the safety cabinet by following the cool edge of the marble floor.

Her scar tightened in the heat, dragging her body into the memory of the first fire.

For one paralyzing second, she was trapped again and waiting for a husband who had already run.

Then she heard Vanessa coughing.

Skyley pushed the memory away and kept moving.

She inserted the real metal strip into the cabinet.

The door unlocked.

Inside were the manual gas valve, sprinkler override, and emergency patio release.

Skyley turned the gas valve until her burned palm could hold it no longer.

The ceiling sprinklers exploded to life.

Water hammered the flames and filled the kitchen with blinding steam.

She struck the patio release.

The metal shutters rose.

Firefighters rushed through the opening as Martin guided them from the lawn.

Two of them found Vanessa beside the pantry and carried her outside.

Skyley searched for Ethan.

The service door stood open.

He had abandoned both women again.

Officer Ortiz saw him running through the orchard toward the cottage.

He carried Skyley's mother's letter in one hand and the melted black card in the other.

Skyley followed despite Nora's call to stop.

Ethan reached the cottage safe and pressed the decoy ring against its lock.

Nothing happened.

He struck the safe with his fist.

"Open it!"

Skyley stood in the broken doorway behind him.

"You had one hour this morning."

Ethan turned, coughing soot.

"You took everything from me."

"You entered my life believing everything I owned would become yours."

"That is what marriage means."

"No, Ethan."

Skyley looked at the false ring in his hand.

"That is what theft means."

He charged toward her.

Ortiz appeared from the orchard and ordered him to stop.

Ethan grabbed Skyley's wrist and held the jagged edge of the melted card near her throat.

"Tell her to lower the weapon."

Skyley met Ortiz's eyes and remained still.

"The card is plastic, Ethan."

He looked at the warped object in his hand.

That instant of confusion was enough.

Skyley twisted free while Ortiz drove him to the floor.

The handcuffs closed at 9:00 a.m., exactly twenty-four hours after his eviction deadline began.

Ethan demanded that Ortiz arrest Skyley for violating the temporary order.

Ortiz informed him that emergency entry to prevent a neighborhood gas explosion was not the crime under investigation.

His own recorded confession was.

Firefighters contained the kitchen blaze before it reached the neighboring gas line.

Vanessa was treated for smoke inhalation on the lawn.

Federal agents arrested Graham in the tower garage as he tried to leave inside a delivery truck.

By sunrise, the house was blackened but standing.

Martin recovered the second-fire audio and most of the channel 4:17 video.

One gap remained.

The missing forty-seven seconds from the first fire had been deleted with Vanessa's password.

Ethan's attorney offered prosecutors the password to restore it in exchange for a reduced charge.

He claimed the missing clip would prove Vanessa, not he, had intended Skyley to die.

From the ambulance, Vanessa heard the accusation and closed her eyes.

"He is telling the truth about my password," she said.

Then she looked directly at Skyley.

"But he is lying about what the clip shows."
