Chapter 11 - The Camera Above the Stove.

Skyley ran from the boardroom before anyone could stop her.
Nora followed while Ortiz ordered officers to seal every exit in the tower.
Graham remained at the conference table, insisting that the camera footage was an elaborate forgery.
Three directors began calling federal investigators anyway.
Vanessa caught Skyley at the elevator.
"Ethan wants you to chase him."
"He is burning the only place that still holds my mother's records."
"The records are not why he went back."
Vanessa showed her a message Ethan had sent seconds earlier.
Bring Skyley home, and you walk away clean.
"He thinks I will deliver you to him," Vanessa said.
"Will you?"
Vanessa's wounded expression gave Skyley an answer she did not yet trust.
The elevator opened onto the lobby.
Martin waited outside with his security van and a remote copy of the channel 4:17 recording.
They watched it during the drive.
The restored footage showed Graham removing the kitchen's thermal fuse and replacing the gas safety valve.
Metadata embedded in the recording matched the original camera serial number, house network, and encrypted municipal timestamp.
Martin explained that changing even one frame would break all three signatures.
Graham could call it fake in public, but no competent examiner would agree.
Ethan entered minutes later and fixed the patio lock so it would close when Skyley's phone crossed the threshold.
Vanessa appeared at the edge of the frame.
She argued with Ethan, but the camera had no sound.
Then she followed him upstairs and disabled the visible system.
At 9:17 p.m., Skyley entered the dark kitchen.
The blue flame erupted exactly as she remembered.
The footage skipped forty-seven seconds.
When it resumed, firefighters were breaking through the patio doors and Vanessa was gone.
"Who deleted the missing section?" Martin asked.
Vanessa stared at the floor of the van.
"I did."
Skyley turned toward her.
"Why?"
"Because the missing seconds show what I did after the fire started."
Before Vanessa could explain, the live kitchen feed filled with static.
Ethan had removed the camera from above the stove.
Martin pulled the van onto Skyley's street.
Flames flickered behind the white curtains, but no smoke alarm sounded.
The police perimeter was still minutes away because Graham's security team had falsely reported an armed hostage at another company property.
Skyley stepped from the van.
Nora seized her arm.
"Going inside is exactly what he expects."
"The main gas line feeds six neighboring houses."
"Let firefighters handle it."
"He disabled the exterior shutoff during the first fire."
Skyley knew the manual valve was inside the kitchen safety cabinet.
She also knew Ethan had never learned how the real ring opened it.
Vanessa removed the paramedic's blanket and moved beside her.
"There is a laundry passage under the east stairs."
"How do you know?"
"I used it the night you burned."
Skyley looked at the woman who had helped betray her and might now be the only person who could lead her through the smoke.
"Show me."
They entered the passage as flames climbed the kitchen curtains.
Behind them, Nora called Ortiz and ordered every approaching officer to protect the neighboring homes first.
Ahead of them, Ethan's voice came through the wall speakers.
"Welcome home, Skyley."
The steel door closed behind both women.
"This time," he said, "only one of you gets out."
