Chapter 15 - Echoes of the Past

Three weeks after the inspection, life had settled into a comfortable, rhythmic groove. Leo was enrolled in the local elementary school, Jax was expanding his motorcycle repair business, and Clara was seriously considering signing a lease on an empty storefront to open her own art studio. Pine Ridge had become her sanctuary.
But the past has a funny way of catching up just when you stop looking over your shoulder.
It was a crisp Tuesday afternoon. Clara had just walked out of the local hardware store, her arms full of canvases and brushes. She was smiling, humming a quiet tune to herself, when she saw it.
Parked diagonally across the street, aggressively taking up two spaces, was a sleek, maroon luxury sedan.
Clara froze. The canvases slipped from her grip, clattering onto the concrete sidewalk. Her heart slammed against her ribs, and the air was suddenly sucked from her lungs. She knew that car. She knew the personalized license plate. Daniel.
He had hired a private investigator to track the paper trail of her annulment filings, refusing to accept the loss of his prized possession. He couldn't stand that she had walked away on her own terms, and his bruised ego had driven him three hundred miles north to drag her back.
From across the street, the driver's side door opened. Daniel stepped out, wearing a sharp designer suit that looked entirely out of place against the rustic backdrop of Pine Ridge. He spotted her immediately. His face contoured into that familiar, terrifying mask of arrogant rage.

As he began to march across the street toward her, the old, conditioned panic flooded Clara’s system. Her first instinct was to run, to hide, to make herself as small as possible. But as her back hit the brick wall of the hardware store, she thought of Jax. She thought of Leo. She thought of the woman who had slammed a diamond ring on a granite counter and chosen her own freedom.
The panic abruptly vanished, leaving behind a cold, forged steel resolve. She was not the same terrified bride he had bullied in that pristine white kitchen. Clara straightened her spine, stepped over her dropped canvases, and stepped forward to meet him.
