Chapter 16 - The Confrontation

Daniel marched across the street, his expensive leather shoes clicking sharply against the pavement. He looked furious, but beneath the anger, Clara could see something else: desperation.
"Clara!" he barked, his voice echoing loudly enough to turn the heads of a few passing locals. "What is this? Are you out of your mind? You're coming home right now."
He reached out to grab her arm, the same domineering move he would have used a month ago. But Clara didn't flinch. She took a deliberate step back, her posture perfectly straight.
"Don't touch me," she said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a lethal, icy calm that made Daniel freeze in his tracks.
Down the street, the heavy glass door of the Crossroads Diner swung open. Jax stepped out onto the sidewalk, his large frame tense. He had recognized the panic in Clara’s posture from the window and was already moving toward them, his protective instincts on full display.
Sensing Jax's approach, Clara held up a single hand, her palm facing the former racer. I've got this, the gesture said. Jax stopped, though his dark eyes remained fixed on Daniel, ready to intervene at a moment's notice.
Clara turned her full attention back to the man she had briefly called her husband. "You don't own me, Daniel. You never did. You hired a private investigator to find me because you can't stand the fact that you lost control. But look around."
She gestured slightly to the street. Sarah had stepped out of the diner, her arms crossed tight over her apron. The owner of the hardware store was standing in his doorway, a heavy wrench loosely held in his hand. The entire town of Pine Ridge was watching, a silent, unyielding wall of support.

"You have no power here," Clara stated, her eyes locked onto his. "If you ever contact me again, if you ever step foot in this town again, I will have you arrested for violating the restraining order. Get in your car and go."
Daniel looked at the heavily tattooed biker, the glaring locals, and finally, at Clara. The submissive, terrified woman he had tried to trap was gone. In her place stood a force of nature. His face flushed a deep, humiliated red. Without another word, he turned on his heel, got back into his maroon sedan, and sped out of Pine Ridge. He never came back.
