Chapter 6 - The Open Road

Despite the comfort of Maya’s apartment, the city still felt too small. Every time Clara saw a maroon sedan that looked like Daniel's, her heart would race, and her breath would catch in her throat. She needed real distance to feel entirely safe.

Three weeks after leaving her marriage, Clara packed her art supplies, a few bags of clothes, and her newly finalized annulment papers into her car. She drove three hundred miles north to a small, forgotten mountain town called Pine Ridge. It was the kind of place where cell service was spotty, the air smelled of pine needles, and nobody cared what you wore or who you used to be.

She rented a tiny, sunlit cabin on the edge of town with the modest savings she had managed to protect. For the first time in a year, Clara woke up to the sound of birds instead of the anxiety of walking on eggshells. She spent her days painting the rolling hills and her evenings reading by the fire. The frantic, terrified woman who had slammed a diamond ring onto a granite counter was slowly fading, replaced by someone quieter, stronger, and fiercely independent.
