Chapter 17 - Legal Victories
A week later, the heavy mountain air felt lighter, as if a storm had finally broken. Clara and Jax walked into the small Pine Ridge post office, Leo skipping happily ahead of them.
Inside her P.O. box, Clara found a thick envelope bearing the return address of Eleanor Vance, her attorney. Her hands trembled slightly as she tore it open. She scanned the heavy legal jargon until her eyes landed on the judge's signature. The annulment was finalized. The marriage was legally void, completely erased from the public record.
"It's done," Clara whispered, a tear of pure relief slipping down her cheek.
"Look!" Leo tugged on Jax’s leather vest. Jax had just opened a certified letter of his own from the state department of child services.

Jax stared at the paper, his mouth slightly open. He read the words three times just to be sure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. "Permanent, full guardianship," Jax read aloud, his voice cracking. He dropped to one knee and pulled Leo into a massive, crushing hug. Over the boy's shoulder, Jax looked at Clara, his eyes shining with profound gratitude.
That evening, the Crossroads Diner was closed to the public for a private celebration. Sarah brought out a massive, three-tiered chocolate cake with the words Welcome Home written in bright blue icing. The diner was filled with laughter, the clinking of coffee mugs, and the joyous noise of a community celebrating its own. Clara looked around the room, realizing she had finally found the family she had been searching for all along.
