Chapter 14 - Cancel Everything Under My Name.

Claire read the flight request twice.

Then she handed her phone to Elias.

Vanessa stared at Robert.

"You booked a plane?"

Robert looked irritated rather than embarrassed.

"It was a precaution."

"For both of us?"

"You said you wanted options."

Ethan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

"So while I was standing in the ballroom wondering where my wife went, you two were planning to leave."

Vanessa's composure cracked.

"I wasn't planning anything with him."

"Your name is on the request."

"He put it there."

Robert raised a hand.

"Enough."

For decades, that word had ended conversations in the Bennett family.

This time no one stopped.

Claire called Marcus.

"Do not approve the aircraft charge."

"Already suspended," Marcus replied.

"Anything else?"

Claire looked around the lake house.

Her mother's trust owned it.

Her father's residence sat on trust property.

The office building carrying the Bennett name belonged to the same structure.

For the first time, Claire understood how much power she actually had.

She also understood why Margaret had warned her about using it carelessly.

"Yes," Claire said.

"Release the reception vendors for all work already completed."

Robert looked surprised.

Ethan did too.

Marcus confirmed that legitimate completed services would be paid from the wedding reserve as originally authorized.

Future extras, after-party extensions, premium transportation, and additional hotel nights would not.

Claire ended the call.

Ethan stared at her.

"Why pay anything?"

"Because the florist didn't forge my signature."

She looked at Vanessa.

"The servers didn't lie to me."

Then at Robert.

"The band didn't manipulate my mother's trust."

Claire had no interest in punishing people who had simply done their jobs.

Her phone call had never been about ruining a wedding.

It had been about ending the assumption that her name was an unlimited resource.

She turned to Ethan.

"The remaining balance is yours."

His jaw tightened.

"How much?"

Daniel checked the reserve.

"Approximately eighty-six thousand dollars in unapproved extras and extended bookings."

Ethan looked stunned.

Vanessa whispered something under her breath.

Claire kept her voice calm.

"You said you paid for your wedding."

Ethan closed his eyes for a moment.

"I know."

"Now you can."

He nodded slowly.

There was no rescue coming this time.

Claire then turned to Robert.

"Tomorrow morning, Elias will begin removing you from every position that depends on my authorization."

Robert's face went rigid.

"You can't erase me from my own company."

"It's not your company."

"My name is on the building."

Claire felt the strange sadness of finally understanding him.

To Robert, a name on a wall had always mattered more than the truth beneath it.

"The building can keep the name," she said.

"You won't keep the control."

Elias explained that Robert would receive formal notices and an opportunity to respond through counsel.

Claire was not interested in spectacle.

She wanted clean records, independent review, and distance.

Vanessa picked up her coat bag.

Ethan stopped her with a question.

"Was any part of today real?"

Vanessa's eyes filled, but she did not perform an answer.

"I wanted the life I thought came with you."

Ethan looked away.

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

She left the lake house alone.

Robert watched her go, then looked at Claire.

"You'll regret humiliating this family."

Claire shook her head.

"The humiliation happened when we started treating love like a line of credit."

May you like

She picked up her mother's photograph.

For the first time that night, Robert had nothing left to say.
