Chapter 2 - The Name on the Contract.

The silence in the ballroom became heavier than the music had ever been.

Guests glanced from Ethan to Claire, then toward the three suited men as if waiting for someone to explain whether this was part of the evening.

It was not.

The man with the leather portfolio introduced himself as Elias Grant, senior counsel for Bennett Holdings.

The second man was Marcus Shaw, the regional director for the hotel group that owned the ballroom.

The third was Daniel Price, a private financial administrator Claire had worked with for nearly a decade.

Ethan folded his arms.

"This is ridiculous."

Elias did not react.

"The ballroom, catering, floral design, transportation, security, entertainment, and guest accommodations were all guaranteed through accounts controlled by Claire Bennett."

Vanessa's smile tightened.

"No, they weren't."

Daniel opened the black folder.

"They were."

Ethan looked at his father.

Robert did not look back.

Claire felt the first stir of suspicion.

Her father had known the men before they introduced themselves.

She could see it in the way his shoulders had stiffened when Elias entered.

"I transferred the money to Ethan," Claire said.

"That's what I was told I was doing."

Daniel's expression became careful.

"You authorized a wedding reserve account six months ago."

"Correct."

"But the contracts were never moved out of your ownership structure."

Ethan stepped forward.

"Because she insisted on controlling everything."

Claire turned slowly.

"You told me the venue required a family guarantor with a longer credit history."

"Same difference."

"No," Elias said.

"It is not the same difference."

Marcus glanced toward the hotel staff waiting near the walls.

"Ms. Bennett has instructed us to suspend further discretionary charges until account ownership is clarified."

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

"You can't stop a wedding halfway through."

Marcus remained calm.

"The ceremony is complete."

"This is the reception."

"Then let it continue," Ethan snapped.

"Put it on my card."

Daniel asked for the card.

Ethan stared at him.

"Excuse me?"

"You said you were paying."

The question was simple enough to feel brutal.

Vanessa lowered her champagne glass.

Claire watched her brother reach into his jacket, then stop.

For the first time that evening, Ethan looked uncertain.

Robert finally spoke.

"This has gone far enough."

Claire faced him.

"I agree."

Robert approached her and lowered his voice.

"Restore the account, Claire."

"Why?"

"Because this family does not need a public scandal."

Claire almost laughed.

"You were comfortable with a public scandal when I was the one being thrown out."

His jaw tightened.

"Your brother is younger."

"He's twenty-nine."

"He made a mistake."

Claire looked at Ethan, then Vanessa, then the guests pretending not to stare.

"No."

Robert's expression sharpened.

"Think carefully."

Claire did.

Then Daniel quietly handed her a single printed page from the folder.

At the bottom was a signature that looked like hers.

Claire stared at it.

She had never signed that page.

The document transferred authority over part of Bennett Holdings to Ethan.

And beneath the signature was a witness line.

Robert Bennett had signed it.
