Chapter 3 - The Signature That Wasn't Hers.
Claire read the page twice before she trusted her own eyes.
The ballroom seemed to recede around her.
The fake signature was not crude.
It was disturbingly close to the way she actually signed her name.
Elias stepped nearer.
"We discovered this document during a routine review this afternoon."
Claire looked up.
"Today?"
"Three hours before the ceremony."
"Why wasn't I told?"
"We attempted to reach you."
Claire checked her phone.
There were no missed calls from Elias.
Daniel glanced toward Ethan.
"Your number had been changed in the internal contact record."
Ethan's face hardened.
"Are you accusing me of something?"
"No," Elias replied.
"I'm telling Ms. Bennett what the records show."
Robert stepped between them.
"This is a family administrative issue."
Claire held up the document.
"You witnessed a signature I never made."
Robert's eyes flicked toward the guests.
"Lower your voice."
"You told me not to ruin Ethan's day."
Her voice remained steady.
"Did you plan to ruin my company instead?"
Vanessa moved closer to Ethan.
"Maybe you forgot signing it."
Claire turned to her.
"I didn't."
Vanessa gave a little shrug.
"You sign hundreds of things."
That answer was too quick.
Claire noticed Elias notice it too.
Marcus quietly instructed the hotel staff to close the ballroom doors so no additional vendors could enter until the account dispute was resolved.
Ethan's embarrassment turned into anger.
"You're humiliating me."
Claire stared at him.
"You stood in the middle of this room and told everyone you paid for a wedding that was charged to me."
"You offered."
"I offered to help."
"That's what family does."
"Apparently only one direction."
The words made Robert flinch.
Claire folded the disputed page and placed it inside her bag.
Elias immediately stopped her.
"Please don't remove the original."
"Why?"
"Because there are four more."
Claire went still.
Daniel opened the folder again.
Inside were transfer forms, account amendments, and a letter authorizing Ethan to act as temporary managing director if Claire became unavailable.
Every page carried a version of her signature.
Every page listed Robert as witness.
One document was dated only two weeks earlier.
That was the week Claire had been in Seattle negotiating a hotel acquisition.
She had not been anywhere near her father.
Ethan shook his head.
"This is crazy."
Claire looked at him.
"Did you know about these?"
He hesitated.
It lasted less than a second.
It was enough.
"Ethan."
"Dad handled the paperwork."
Robert turned sharply.
"Don't drag me into your panic."
Claire felt something inside her break cleanly rather than painfully.
For years, she had interpreted Robert's favoritism as weakness.
Now she wondered if it had been strategy.
Elias closed the portfolio.
"Ms. Bennett, we should leave the reception and review the corporate records privately."
Claire nodded.
Before she could move, Vanessa spoke.
"If you walk out now, everyone will know you came here just to destroy your brother's wedding."
Claire looked at the bride's flawless white dress, then at Ethan's furious face.
"No."
She slipped her phone back into her bag.
"Everyone will know I came because I thought I still had a family."
Then Daniel's tablet chimed.
He looked down at the screen and lost color.
"Claire, there's been another transfer attempt."
"From what account?"

"The account holding your mother's estate."
