Chapter 8 - The Man Inside Her Company.

Martin Hale had worked beside Claire for nine years.

He had been at her mother's memorial service.

He had advised Claire through acquisitions, audits, and the difficult years when Bennett Holdings almost collapsed under old debt.

He had also been the person who told her Ethan needed a family guarantor for the wedding reserve account.

Claire stared at the photograph until the implication became undeniable.

"When was this taken?"

Julia pointed to the date printed on the back.

"Fourteen days ago."

Claire had been in Seattle that week.

The same week one of the forged authority transfers had been signed.

Elias called his office and instructed his team to suspend Martin's access to all corporate systems.

Daniel did the same with the private accounts.

Ethan watched them work.

"You think Martin helped Dad steal from the trust?"

Claire hated the word, even though it fit.

"I think we stop assuming anything and start checking everything."

Julia nodded.

"That's what Margaret used to say."

Claire looked at her sharply.

"You knew my mother well?"

"Better than your father wanted anyone to know."

Julia explained that Margaret had discovered irregular withdrawals years before her illness.

At first, the amounts were small.

Robert described them as short-term business expenses.

Then the withdrawals grew larger and began flowing through companies connected to friends, contractors, and eventually Ethan's ventures.

Margaret became convinced Robert was using family assets to maintain the appearance of success.

"Why didn't she tell us?" Ethan asked.

Julia's expression softened.

"She was trying to protect you from choosing sides while she gathered proof."

Ethan looked down.

"Dad told me she didn't trust me with money."

"She didn't trust Robert with your name," Julia replied.

That distinction silenced him.

Claire thought of the sentence on the photograph.

This house is theirs, but only Claire can keep it safe.

For years, she had interpreted her mother's confidence as another responsibility placed on her shoulders.

Now she understood it might have been a warning.

Marcus approached from the corridor.

"We found Mrs. Bennett."

Claire almost corrected him before realizing he meant Vanessa.

"Where?"

"In the hotel business center."

Ethan frowned.

"Doing what?"

Marcus held up a hotel access log.

"She requested printing access from a private terminal."

"For what?"

"We don't know yet."

A hotel employee had entered before the files finished printing.

Vanessa had left through the service corridor.

Security recovered three pages from the printer tray.

Marcus handed them to Claire.

They were draft notices announcing Ethan Bennett as acting chief executive of Bennett Holdings.

One page contained a prepared statement claiming Claire had taken an indefinite leave because of emotional exhaustion.

Ethan read it over her shoulder.

"I never approved this."

Claire looked at him.

"Would you have?"

His silence lasted too long.

"Yesterday?" he admitted.

"Maybe."

The answer hurt more because it was honest.

Ethan looked ashamed.

"I thought you were controlling everything because you liked being needed."

Claire folded the pages.

"And I thought paying for everything meant I was helping."

Neither of them had time to say more.

Elias's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and immediately placed the call on speaker.

A security analyst from Bennett Holdings spoke from the other end.

"We've locked Martin Hale out."

Claire exhaled.

Then the analyst continued.

"But before the lock took effect, he downloaded the complete trust archive."

"Where is he now?"

May you like

There was a pause.

"According to his building access badge, he's inside your executive office."
