Chapter 6 - The Box Before Midnight.

The black sedan left the hotel through a side entrance while wedding guests were still clustered beneath the ballroom chandeliers.

Claire sat in the rear seat with her mother's letter unfolded across her lap.

Elias was beside her, reading copies of the trust records on his tablet.

Daniel drove because he knew the private entrance to First Commonwealth Bank.

"How can Robert access a box that belongs to me?" Claire asked.

Elias looked up.

"He may not be able to."

"But he tried."

"Yes."

That distinction did not comfort her.

The bank occupied an old stone building six blocks from the hotel, and its private-client wing remained open late for customers with secure vault privileges.

A manager named Nora Feld met them behind a locked glass door.

She recognized Elias immediately.

"You're here about B-214."

Claire nodded.

Nora led them through two security doors and into a quiet consultation room.

"Mr. Robert Bennett arrived twenty minutes ago," she said.

Claire stared at her.

"He's here?"

"He attempted to access the box using an authorization document."

"Did you let him?"

"No."

Claire released a breath she had not realized she was holding.

Nora placed a photocopy on the table.

The authorization carried Claire's name.

Again, the signature resembled hers.

Again, she had never made it.

Elias leaned closer.

"When was this filed?"

"Four days ago."

Claire's stomach turned.

This had not been a panicked decision made after her phone call at the wedding.

Someone had prepared for the box before tonight.

"Where is my father now?"

Nora hesitated.

"He left when we requested additional verification."

Daniel checked the hallway camera display mounted near the door.

"Did he leave alone?"

Nora shook her head.

"A woman was waiting in the lobby."

Claire immediately thought of Vanessa.

"Young, brown hair, wedding dress?"

"No."

Nora's answer stopped her.

"She was around your age, maybe a little older, with short blond hair and a gray coat."

Claire did not know anyone matching that description.

Elias asked to see the access log.

Nora provided it.

Robert had tried to open B-214 twice in the past three months.

Both attempts had been denied because Margaret's original instruction required Claire's physical key and identification.

Claire touched the brass key in her palm.

"Open it."

The vault was colder than she expected.

Nora inserted the bank key.

Claire inserted Margaret's.

Together, they turned both locks.

Box B-214 slid from the wall with a metallic scrape.

Inside were three objects.

A red ledger.

A sealed flash drive.

And a photograph of Claire and Ethan as children standing beside their mother at a lake house.

Claire picked up the photograph first.

On the back, Margaret had written one sentence.

"This house is theirs, but only Claire can keep it safe."

Elias opened the red ledger.

His expression changed after the first page.

"Claire, your mother's trust owns more than the lake house."

"How much more?"

Elias turned the ledger toward her.

The first listed asset was the family home Robert had lived in for thirty-two years.

The second was the office building Ethan believed their father owned.

The third was the land beneath the hotel where the wedding reception was happening.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"The hotel land?"

He nodded slowly.

Elias turned another page.

There, under a section titled Temporary Beneficiary Advances, was Ethan's name.

Beside it were dozens of withdrawals.

The total was nearly two million dollars.

And every approval carried Claire's forged signature.
