Chapter 7 - The Brother Who Didn't Know.

Claire expected anger when she returned to the hotel.

What she found was confusion.

The ballroom lights were still on, but the band had packed away half its instruments.

Some guests had left.

Others remained in small groups, speaking quietly while pretending not to watch the Bennett family.

Ethan stood near the dance floor without Vanessa.

His bow tie was gone.

His dark green shirt was open at the collar.

For the first time all evening, he looked less like an arrogant groom and more like Claire's younger brother.

"Where's Dad?" Claire asked.

Ethan gave a humorless laugh.

"I was hoping you knew."

Claire looked around.

"Vanessa?"

"Also gone."

That answer made Daniel immediately step away to call hotel security.

Claire approached Ethan with the red ledger under her arm.

"Did you know Mom's trust owned the land under this hotel?"

Ethan frowned.

"Mom didn't own land under a hotel."

"She did."

"Dad said she left a few investment accounts and the lake house was sold years ago."

Claire watched his face carefully.

He looked genuinely lost.

She opened the ledger to the page of beneficiary advances.

"Do you recognize these payments?"

Ethan scanned the entries.

His expression shifted from confusion to alarm.

"Some of them."

"Which ones?"

"The first two."

He pointed at amounts totaling one hundred eighty thousand dollars.

"Dad told me those were family loans for my restaurant project."

"And the rest?"

"I've never seen them."

Claire wanted to believe him.

After everything he had said to her, believing him felt almost insulting to herself.

Yet the Ethan standing in front of her did not look like a man discovering his lie had failed.

He looked like a man discovering someone else had used his name.

"There are almost two million dollars here," Claire said.

Ethan went pale.

"I never got two million dollars."

A voice behind them interrupted.

"Neither did he."

The woman from the bank lobby stood near the ballroom entrance.

Short blond hair.

Gray coat.

Mid-forties.

She held a thick envelope against her side.

Elias stepped in front of Claire.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at Claire instead.

"My name is Julia Mercer."

Ethan froze.

Claire noticed immediately.

"You know her?"

Ethan stared at Julia.

"She used to work for Dad."

Julia nodded.

"I was Robert Bennett's bookkeeper for seventeen years."

Claire remembered the name faintly from childhood.

Julia had disappeared from the company around the time Margaret became ill.

Robert had said she moved away.

"Why were you with my father at the bank?" Claire asked.

Julia's eyes hardened.

"I wasn't with him."

"The manager saw you."

"I followed him."

Ethan laughed once in disbelief.

"This keeps getting better."

Julia handed the envelope to Elias.

"Robert called me three days ago after six years of silence."

"Why?"

"Because he knew Claire's mother left records in that box."

Claire felt cold again.

"How did he know?"

Julia looked directly at her.

"Because I helped Margaret put them there."

The room seemed to narrow around the four of them.

Julia continued.

"Your father did not forge those signatures alone."

Ethan's eyes moved toward the empty bridal table.

"Vanessa?"

Julia shook her head.

"No."

Then she opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph taken two weeks earlier.

Robert was seated in a restaurant booth beside a man Claire recognized from her own company.

Her chief financial officer, Martin Hale.
