Chapter 5 - The Key in the Letter.

Claire had imagined hearing her mother's voice again in dreams, old recordings, or some forgotten voicemail.

She had never imagined hearing it through a warning written in blue ink.

The letter trembled slightly in her hand.

Ethan moved closer.

"What does it say?"

Claire kept reading.

Margaret wrote that she had created a separate trust from property inherited from her own parents.

She wrote that Claire would control it after turning thirty-five.

She wrote that Ethan would receive support from the trust only if Claire approved it.

Most unsettling of all, she wrote that Robert had repeatedly pressured her to change those terms.

Claire reached the second page.

"Your father believes love should look like obedience," Margaret had written.

"Do not confuse the two."

Claire swallowed hard.

Robert extended his hand.

"Give me the letter."

Claire folded it against her chest.

"No."

"Your mother was sick when she wrote that."

Elias spoke before Claire could answer.

"The trust was executed with independent counsel six months before Mrs. Bennett became ill."

Robert's face tightened.

"You have no idea what happened in our marriage."

"I don't need to," Claire said.

"I need to know what happened to her trust."

The small brass key taped to the final page was labeled B-214.

Daniel recognized the code.

"Private storage vault."

Claire looked at him.

"Where?"

"First Commonwealth Bank downtown."

Robert stepped backward.

That movement told Claire more than any confession could have.

Ethan saw it too.

"Dad, what's in the box?"

"Nothing that concerns you."

Vanessa gave a short, incredulous laugh.

"Apparently everything concerns us now."

Ethan turned on her.

"You opened a company without telling me."

"And your family apparently hid an estate from your sister."

"Don't compare those things."

Claire looked down at the letter again.

The final paragraph instructed her to open box B-214 only if Robert ever tried to move trust assets without her knowledge.

That condition had just been met.

Elias suggested they secure the original documents and leave.

Claire agreed.

Robert blocked her path.

He did not touch her.

He simply stood there with a look she remembered from childhood, the look that had once been enough to make both children fall silent.

"If you walk out with that key, you are choosing money over your family."

Claire stared at him.

"You already chose money."

His eyes narrowed.

"You don't understand what that trust was meant to prevent."

"Then explain it."

Robert glanced toward Ethan.

For a moment, Claire thought he might finally tell the truth.

Instead, he stepped aside.

"Open the box."

His voice became strangely calm.

"Then come back and tell your brother what your mother really thought of him."

Ethan's expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

Robert did not answer.

Claire left the ballroom with Elias and Daniel while Marcus remained behind to stabilize the venue charges.

As the elevator doors closed, Claire looked through the narrowing gap.

Her brother was staring at their father.

Vanessa was already on her phone.

Then Daniel's phone buzzed again.

He read the message and looked at Claire.

"Someone just tried to access box B-214."

"Who?"

May you like

Daniel turned the screen toward her.

The access request had been submitted under Robert Bennett's name.
