Chapter 10 - The Wedding That Never Was.

The edited confession rolled across the floral wall in front of every remaining guest.
Richard's sentences had been cut, rearranged, and stitched around Claire's name.
It sounded convincing because most cruel lies are built from pieces of truth.
Phones rose throughout the ballroom despite Officer Shaw's warning.
Within seconds, the video was streaming beyond Halcyon Hall.
The company's general counsel called Mara and reported that three lenders had frozen Hart Hospitality's credit lines.
Two board members demanded Claire's immediate suspension.
A reporter emailed questions about Thomas Reed's death before the false video finished playing.
The lie was no longer trapped inside a wedding hall.
It was moving through banks, court offices, newsrooms, and the phones of employees who feared their paychecks would disappear by morning.
Claire could survive strangers hating her.
She could not accept thousands of workers paying for a war created by two families and one dead man's cowardice.
She opened an emergency payroll reserve on her phone and protected the next month's wages before responding to Vanessa.
Claire saw comments multiply beneath a guest's live broadcast.
THIEF.
LIAR.
ARREST HER.
Vanessa stood beneath the bright chandeliers in her white gown and allowed the world to mistake vengeance for innocence.
"Restore the vendor contracts," she said.
"Sign the marriage certificate as controlling sponsor, and we replace the edited file with the real confession."
"You would still expose my father."
"He should be exposed."
"On that, we agree."
Vanessa's expression changed.
She had built the threat around Claire protecting the Hart name.
She had never imagined Claire would surrender it.
"Release the original now," Claire said.
"Return the stolen money, and I will honor the restitution promised to your family after an independent audit."
Nathan stared at her.
"You would give them the shares after this?"
"The shares were never ours to keep."
"They tried to ruin you."
"That does not make Dad innocent."
Nathan shook his head as if integrity were another form of betrayal.
"You always decide what is right for everyone."
Claire faced him.
"Then decide for yourself."
She pointed toward Vanessa.
"Marry her, knowing every message was a trap."
She pointed toward Officer Shaw.
"Tell the truth about hitting me, knowing there may be consequences."
Then she pointed toward the recorder.
"Or help me release the full confession and accept what our father did."
Nathan looked at the bride, the officer, and the machine holding his father's voice.
For once, Claire did not rescue him from the choice.
The county investigator handed over the evidence pouch after learning the seizure order was fraudulent.
Claire removed her white phone and canceled the scheduled deletion with fourteen minutes remaining.
She opened the building's private network and searched for the stolen certificate.
A scanner in the bridal suite had processed one document three minutes earlier.
Mara unlocked the suite remotely.
Claire, Nathan, and Shaw ran upstairs.
They found Mason beside the printer with the leather case open.
The marriage certificate lay beneath his hand.
Claire's signature appeared on the sponsor line.
It was flawless.
Mason had copied it from the deed.
"The county portal accepted it," he said.
Nathan stopped in the doorway.
"Then I am married."
Mason smiled.
"No."
He turned the certificate toward them.

The spouse named beside Nathan Hart was not Vanessa Cole.
It was Claire Hart.
