Chapter 2 - The Price of Silence.

Nathan tore the deed from Mara's hands before Claire could study the second page.

"This is fake."

"The signature is fake," Claire said.

"The filing is real."

Vanessa crossed the ballroom with one hand pressed against the lace over her heart.

"Nathan, I have never seen that document."

Her voice trembled with exactly the right amount of pain.

Claire noticed that she did not ask what company was named on it.

"Then how did your driver's license get attached to the filing?"

Mara held up the copied identification sheet.

Nathan stared at Vanessa.

Vanessa stared at Claire.

"She planted it," the bride whispered.

The accusation traveled through the room faster than any shout.

Guests began lifting their phones.

Claire heard the small electronic chime of videos beginning to record.

Nathan stepped between his sister and his bride.

"You came here to destroy us."

"I came because someone moved four hundred eighty thousand dollars out of Hart Hospitality at 3:12 this afternoon."

"That money paid for the wedding."

"Thirty-two thousand paid for the wedding."

Claire opened her banking application and showed him the missing amount.

"The rest went to Vela Crown Holdings."

Vanessa's face became perfectly still.

"I don't know that name."

Claire turned to Mara.

"Lock every office and stop anyone from leaving with a company device."

Nathan seized Claire's wrist.

"You don't give orders at my wedding."

The white smartphone slipped from her hand and struck the marble floor.

Its screen did not break.

Something inside Nathan did.

"Apologize to Vanessa, restore the wedding, and leave."

Claire looked down at his fingers crushing her wrist.

"Let go."

"Not until you fix this."

A security officer moved forward, but Claire stopped him with a glance.

She wanted Nathan to choose who he was in front of everyone.

He released her only when Vanessa touched his shoulder.

"Please," the bride said softly.

"This stress isn't good for the baby."

Nathan went pale.

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Claire felt the floor tilt beneath her champagne silk heels.

Nathan had told her they were waiting to start a family.

Vanessa placed both hands over her stomach and allowed a tear to fall.

"I wanted to announce it after our first dance."

Nathan turned on Claire with renewed fury.

"Look what you did."

Claire bent and retrieved her phone.

A new message glowed on the screen from Dr. Lena Ortiz, the family physician.

Claire had contacted her that morning after finding prenatal charges on a company card.

The reply contained only one sentence.

Vanessa Cole has never been my patient, and the ultrasound invoice you sent me was altered.

Claire did not expose the lie immediately.

Instead, she watched Vanessa's left hand.

The bride was pressing her thumb against a slim gold ring on her index finger.

Around them, the cancellation continued with disciplined precision.

The florist removed the ceremonial arch but left every table arrangement untouched so no guest would be endangered by rushing workers.

The kitchen sealed the unopened food while servers quietly collected company-owned silver.

Claire had written the cancellation plan to protect people, not to punish them.

Vanessa watched each step with growing panic because the stopped services were also closing routes she had expected to use.

The photographer packed the wireless transmitters.

The private driver returned the keys to Mara.

The bride's escape was shrinking with every canceled contract.

Each time she pressed it, a tiny blue light flashed.

Mara saw it too.

"That is not jewelry," Mara whispered.

The ballroom speakers suddenly crackled alive.

May you like

A man's voice came through them, low and distorted.

"Vanessa, the vault is open."
