Chapter 4 - When the Chandeliers Went Dark.

Nathan spun toward Vanessa so fast that the tails of his black tuxedo snapped behind him.
"That was your voice."
Vanessa did not blink.
"It was a recording."
"Of what?"
"Of her framing me."
She pointed at Claire with the confidence of someone who had practiced every escape.
The chandeliers died.
Darkness swallowed Halcyon Hall.
Guests screamed as glass shattered near the bar.
Claire activated the flashlight on her white phone and ran toward the service corridor.
Nathan caught up before the kitchen doors.
"You are not going alone."
"Five minutes ago, you threw me out."
"Five minutes ago, I did not know Mason had my phone."
"You still believed Vanessa after hearing her voice."
Nathan had no answer.
They descended the narrow stone stairway while emergency lights pulsed red along the floor.
Claire's cheek throbbed with each heartbeat.
Nathan kept looking at the mark he had left, then looking away.
"I thought you sent those messages," he said.
"What messages?"
"The ones telling Vanessa she was trash and that you would stop the wedding."
Claire held the phone between them.
"Show me."
"She deleted them because she was scared."
Claire gave him a tired, bitter smile.
"Of course she did."
They reached the archive corridor and found Nathan's black phone crushed beneath a fire extinguisher.
The vault door stood open.
Wet footprints crossed the stone floor from the wine cellar and ended beside the vault.
Claire recognized the sharp citrus fragrance Vanessa had worn during the rehearsal dinner.
A thin strand of white lace clung to the edge of the steel door.
Nathan saw it too, but he rubbed the fabric between his fingers as if it might become something else.
"A bridesmaid could have come down here."
"A bridesmaid with your phone, Vanessa's perfume, and the vault code?"
"I am trying to be certain."
"No, you are trying to delay certainty until it stops hurting."
His jaw tightened, yet he slipped the lace into his pocket instead of leaving it behind.
The blue envelope was gone.
Inside the vault, an old portrait of their father had been pulled from the wall.
Behind it was a smaller steel compartment Claire had never seen.
Nathan reached inside and found a cassette recorder, a key, and a handwritten note.
The note was addressed to Claire.
If Nathan marries before midnight, do not let the certificate be filed until he hears the tape.
Nathan read it twice.
"Dad knew about Vanessa?"
"Dad died four years before you met her."
Footsteps scraped at the far end of the corridor.
Mason emerged from the shadows holding the blue envelope.
"Neither of you understands what your father did."
Nathan advanced on him.
"You stole my phone."
Mason pulled a silver lighter from his pocket.
"I saved your life for ten years."
He touched the flame to the envelope.
Claire lunged.
Nathan struck Mason's wrist, and the burning envelope fell onto the carpet.
Claire stamped out the flame while the men crashed against the stone wall.
Mason drove his shoulder into Nathan and fled through the wine cellar door.
Nathan started after him, but Claire stopped him.
The envelope had burned along one edge, exposing a legal document inside.
She pulled it free.
The first line named Nathan as beneficiary of a controlling interest in Hart Hospitality.
The second line imposed a condition.

Upon marriage, those shares would transfer immediately to the spouse for ninety days of irrevocable voting authority.
At the bottom, someone had added Vanessa's name in fresh black ink.
