Chapter 11 - A Marriage Made of Forgery.

Nathan read the certificate again as if the letters might rearrange themselves into mercy.
"Why is my sister listed as my spouse?"
Mason leaned against the bridal vanity and smiled.
"Because the trust does not care about love."
He explained that the county portal would send the certificate to the trust administrator within minutes.
The impossible marriage would be rejected, but not before triggering an investigation into Claire.
The forged sponsor signature, the altered deed, and the edited confession would make it appear that she had tried to seize Nathan's shares through identity fraud.
By the time she cleared her name, Vela Crown Holdings would have purchased Hart Hospitality from a court-appointed receiver.
The false marriage was only one layer.
Mason had inserted Claire's device credentials into the county upload, used her forged signature on the sponsor line, and routed the filing through the ballroom network.
Every electronic trace would lead back to her phone and her building.
Vanessa's false assault complaint would supply the emotional motive.
The canceled wedding would appear to be proof that Claire had acted out of obsession.
Mason had transformed every attempt she made to stop them into evidence that she had begun the fraud herself.
It was elegant enough to terrify her and cruel enough to make Vanessa finally understand that she had never been his partner.
"You never intended Vanessa to own the shares," Claire said.
"Vanessa wanted justice wrapped in a wedding veil."
Mason closed the leather case.
"I wanted the company."
The bridal suite door opened behind them.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, her face drained of color beneath her wedding makeup.
"You put Claire's name on my certificate."
Mason did not look ashamed.
"There was never going to be a legal wedding."
"You promised me Nathan would feel what Dad felt when everything was taken."
"He did."
"You promised we would rebuild the company under Dad's name."
"You were useful because he loved you."
Vanessa crossed the room and slapped Mason.
The sound echoed against the mirrors.
Nathan recoiled, and Claire saw him understand the violence of public humiliation from the other side.
Mason touched his reddened cheek and laughed.
"Do you think that makes you different from him?"
Vanessa's anger cracked into grief.
"I am your sister."
"You are evidence."
Claire had activated the voice recorder on her white phone when they entered the suite.
She lowered the device beside her champagne dress so Mason would not notice the glowing screen.
Officer Shaw moved behind Mason and reached for the leather case.
Mason saw Claire's phone reflected in the mirror.
He shoved the vanity bench into Shaw's path and lunged.
Nathan stepped between them.
Mason struck him once, seized the white phone, and threw it toward Vanessa.
"Finish what you started."
Vanessa caught it against the lace of her gown.
For one suspended second, she looked at Nathan.
He did not plead for the phone.
"If any part of you meant what you said at the altar," he told her, "give it back."
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
Then she ran.
Shaw pinned Mason against the wall while Claire followed the bride into the corridor.
The ballroom clock showed 11:51.
Claire's phone controlled the trust portal, the building records, and the only clean copy of Mason's confession.

Vanessa reached the upper balcony and held the phone over the marble floor three stories below.
"One more step," she said, "and your truth shatters with it."
