Chapter 13 - The Man Beneath the Flowers.

Every head turned toward the white floral wall.
An elderly man in a midnight-blue suit stood among the remaining guests with a champagne glass in his hand.
Gerald Pike had signed Richard Hart's trust, prosecuted Thomas Reed, and announced his retirement three years earlier.
He set down the glass without hurry.
"Mara always did enjoy a dramatic accusation."
Mara descended the stairs.
"You built Vela Crown before Thomas's trial."
Pike smiled.
"Can you prove that?"
Claire understood the shape of the trap.
Pike had encouraged Mason and Vanessa to target the Harts, supplied the forged seal, and waited for both families to destroy each other.
Once the trust fell into receivership, his hidden company would acquire Hart Hospitality for a fraction of its value.
Thomas Reed had discovered Pike's theft, not Richard's alone.
Mara explained that Pike had created phantom renovation loans against six Hart properties.
Thomas traced the payments to Vela Crown and brought the records to Richard.
Instead of calling the authorities, Richard accepted Pike's offer to erase the company's immediate debts.
Thomas became the sacrifice that kept both men wealthy.
Mason and Vanessa had spent years believing Richard alone designed the crime because Pike had quietly financed their investigation.
He supplied documents that were almost true, encouraged their anger, and removed every page bearing his own name.
Their search for justice had been funded by the person most threatened by it.
Richard had framed his friend to protect himself from prison and Pike from exposure.
"The original confession names you," Claire said.
Pike looked toward the cassette recorder on the dance floor.
"That machine has been edited so many times that no court will trust it."
Mara removed a small brass key from beneath her collar.
It matched the key Nathan had found behind their father's portrait.
"Richard sent me the master tape before he died."
Vanessa lowered the white phone.
"Who are you?"
"I was Thomas's legal assistant."
Mara's voice carried through the ballroom without a microphone.
"I testified against him after Pike threatened my son."
She looked at Mason.
"I have spent eighteen years trying to undo that cowardice."
Mason stared at her with open hatred.
"You helped send him to prison."
"Yes."
Mara did not hide behind tears.
"And I will confess under oath."
Pike moved toward the side exit.
Officer Shaw ordered him to stop.
The warm background lights died again.
Pike had pressed a control hidden inside his watch.
Smoke poured from behind the flower wall as a bundle of paper decorations ignited.
The guests rushed toward the open doors.
Sprinklers burst across the ceiling, soaking the white roses and abandoned feast.
Pike disappeared through the service corridor.
Claire used the light from the chandeliers, which remained bright on emergency power, and ran after him.
Nathan followed without touching her or telling her to stop.
They found Pike in the archive stairwell holding the master tape above a metal trash bin filled with flame.
"Your father was weak," Pike said.
"Thomas was naive, and both of you inherited the worst of them."
He dropped the tape.
Nathan lunged for Pike.
Claire lunged for the bin.
Vanessa arrived behind them and threw Claire's white phone into the flames instead.
For a terrible second, everyone stared at her.

Then Vanessa reached into her lace bodice and held up the master tape.
"I switched them," she said.
