Chapter 8 - The Lie Under Oath.

Blue police lights washed across the white flowers outside Halcyon Hall.
Officer Daniel Shaw entered the ballroom and found three versions of the same disaster waiting for him.
Vanessa claimed Claire had attacked her, forged the deed, and imprisoned the guests.
Nathan claimed he no longer knew what was true.
Claire handed Shaw her white phone and asked him to begin with the bank transfer.
Vanessa had returned through the main entrance minutes earlier, tearful and barefoot, with a shallow cut on her arm.
Before Officer Shaw asked his first question, a guest's edited video had already gathered thousands of views.
It began after Nathan's slap and showed only Claire making the cancellation call.
The caption called her a jealous sister who ruined a pregnant bride's wedding.
Claire's phone filled with threats from strangers who had watched nine seconds and believed they knew a lifetime.
Vanessa glanced at each alert with concealed satisfaction.
She did not merely need Claire arrested.
She needed the public to decide the verdict before investigators found the evidence.
She said Claire had chased her with broken glass.
"Where is the marriage certificate?" Claire asked.
"I don't have it."
"Where is Mason?"
"I haven't seen him since the ceremony."
Officer Shaw looked toward the wedding guests recording from their tables.
"Everyone put your phones away."
No one obeyed.
Vanessa lifted her arm so the cut caught the chandelier light.
"I want her arrested."
Shaw turned to Nathan.
"Did your sister become violent?"
Claire watched her brother choose between the truth and the comfort of uncertainty.
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
"Claire came here angry."
"That was not the question," Claire said.
"She grabbed Vanessa's purse."
"After Vanessa locked the building and stole company records."
Vanessa began to cry.
Nathan closed his eyes.
"Claire has always hated losing control."
The betrayal was quiet this time.
It cut deeper because he sounded reasonable.
Shaw asked Claire to turn around while he investigated the assault complaint.
Mara stepped between them.
"There are cameras throughout this building."
"The camera server was wiped at 9:14," Shaw said.
Vanessa looked down to hide her satisfaction.
Claire opened the cloud backup on her phone.
The final uploaded clip showed Nathan slapping her.
The next file should have shown Vanessa's ring and Mason entering the vault.
It had been replaced by nine seconds of black screen.
"Convenient," Vanessa whispered.
Officer Shaw noticed the swelling on Claire's cheek.
"Did your brother strike you?"
Nathan's face collapsed.
Claire could have protected him as she always had.
She could have called it a misunderstanding and carried his shame one more time.
"Yes."
The word changed the room.
Shaw separated Nathan from the others.
Vanessa's tears stopped.
She had wanted Claire removed, not Nathan questioned.
"She provoked him," Vanessa said.
"That is not a defense," Shaw replied.
He examined Vanessa's cut and found silver glitter in the wound.
The broken champagne bottle had no glitter.
The decorative mirror in the bridal suite did.
Vanessa had cut herself upstairs.
Her story began to fracture.
Then a county investigator entered carrying a sealed court order.
The order accused Claire of misappropriating Hart trust assets and authorized the temporary seizure of her phone.
It had been signed that afternoon by a judge whose signature Claire recognized.
The judge had died six months earlier.
Before Claire could speak, the investigator took the white phone from her hand.
Vanessa smiled through her tears.
