Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Chose Wrong.

The officiant clutched the leather case and sprinted toward the terrace doors.

Claire drove her heel down on Nathan's shoe and twisted free.

"You are helping her steal from us."

Nathan blocked her again.

"I am stopping you from destroying the certificate."

"She forged your signature."

"You forged Dad's trust."

The accusation emptied Claire of breath.

Even Vanessa looked surprised by how completely Nathan had chosen the lie.

Mara ordered security to detain the officiant.

He reached the terrace, but two guards closed the glass doors before he could escape.

Vanessa lifted a champagne bottle from the head table and smashed it against the floor.

Guests recoiled from the spray of glass.

In the confusion, she slipped behind the floral wall.

Claire raised her white phone and opened the ballroom map.

A service elevator was descending from the second floor.

"She is going to the parking level."

Nathan snatched the burned trust page from Claire's hand.

"Not until I know what you changed."

"Give that back."

He held it above the candle at the nearest table.

Claire froze.

"You would burn our father's last document to protect a woman who lied about carrying your child?"

Pain crossed Nathan's face.

"You don't know that she lied."

Claire opened the doctor's message and held it beneath the chandelier light.

Nathan read it without moving.

"She could have another doctor."

"The ultrasound she charged to our company belongs to a patient in Ohio."

Vanessa's elegant white bridal purse remained on the head table.

Claire overturned it.

Cosmetics, a hotel key, and a second smartphone fell onto the linen.

The second phone displayed a photograph of the stolen blue envelope.

Nathan picked it up.

The device unlocked with the passcode Vanessa had used for everything since college.

Inside was a message thread with Mason.

The latest message read, He struck her exactly when you said he would.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Claire read the earlier messages over his shoulder.

For six months, Vanessa had sent Nathan fabricated screenshots that appeared to come from Claire.

One claimed Claire had called the bride a temporary guest in the Hart family.

Another showed a threat to expose Nathan's old business losses during the rehearsal dinner.

The timestamps matched nights when Claire had been working beside Nathan in the same room.

He had never checked because resentment made the impossible feel familiar.

Vanessa had even copied Claire's habit of ending messages without punctuation.

The imitation was accurate enough to fool someone who wanted to be fooled, but not someone who had ever tried to understand her.

She had coached him before every argument.

She had told Mason when Nathan was tired, embarrassed, drunk, or afraid.

She had designed the slap before Claire entered the ballroom.

Nathan dropped the phone as if it had burned him.

"I didn't plan that."

"You still did it."

He looked at Claire's reddened cheek.

"I am sorry."

"No, you are frightened."

"Claire -"

"An apology is what you give after accepting the truth, not when the lie stops protecting you."

The service elevator chimed below them.

Mara's guards reached the parking level and found the officiant's car running.

Vanessa was not inside.

Claire's phone vibrated with an incoming video call.

Mason appeared on the screen beside Vanessa.

Behind them stood shelves of wine and the open vault.

Vanessa held the cassette recorder against her white lace bodice.
