Chapter 10: The Ghost in the Walls

Finding the server required dismantling a piece of the foundation's newly established peace. Evelyn restricted access to the east wing, citing emergency plumbing repairs to the residents. Under the cover of night, she and Victor went to work, armed with sledgehammers, flashlights, and the cryptic maps from Clara’s ledger.

The east wing had once been Adrian’s private library, a room Evelyn had purposefully left unused, boarding up its mahogany doors. Stripping back the velvet wallpaper felt like peeling away the skin of a monster.

"The blueprints show a void behind the fireplace," Victor grunted, swinging the heavy hammer into the plaster. Dust billowed into the air, choking the room with the scent of old wood and ash.

Evelyn helped clear the debris, her hands raw and blistered. She didn't care. Every brick they removed felt like an exorcism. For hours, they worked in grueling silence, the mansion silent around them. Finally, Victor’s hammer struck something that didn't crumble. It rang with a dull, metallic thud.

Behind the nineteenth-century brickwork lay a sleek, modern titanium vault door, no larger than a microwave. A biometric scanner pulsed with a faint, red light in the darkness.

"Adrian's fingerprint," Victor said, wiping sweat from his brow. "Or retinal scan. We can't blow it open without risking whatever is inside."

Evelyn stared at the red light. She closed her eyes, remembering the man she had married. Adrian was a narcissist, a man obsessed with control and legacy. He wouldn't trust a machine with his life. He would only trust himself. But what happens when he is unavailable?

"He wouldn't use just his own biometrics," Evelyn murmured. "He needed a fail-safe. Someone he owned completely."

She stepped forward, pulling off her work glove. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she raised her hand. Adrian had always called her his greatest possession, the one thing he controlled absolutely. He had forced her into countless legal documents, making her the unwitting co-signer of his life.

She placed her thumb onto the glowing glass of the scanner.

The machine beeped. The light flashed from red to green. A heavy lock disengaged with a satisfying click.

Inside the vault sat a single, heavily encrypted hard drive. It was small, unassuming, and held the power to destroy an empire. Evelyn reached in and pulled it out. The metal was cold against her palm.

"We have it," Victor said, awe in his voice.

"Yes," Evelyn replied, slipping the drive into her pocket. "Now, we let Marcus Thorne think he’s won."
