Chapter 4: Adrian’s Final Lie

Adrian’s lawyers moved fast.
By noon, every major news outlet had received the same statement.
Evelyn was unstable.
The video was manipulated.
The injuries were self-inflicted.
Adrian Vale was the victim of a calculated takeover.
For three hours, the story almost worked.
Then Evelyn released the second recording.
Not the one from the hall.
The old one.
A conversation from six months earlier.
Adrian’s voice was clear.
“After the anniversary gala, I’ll force Evelyn into a breakdown. Once the board doubts her stability, her shares become useless.”
Another voice asked, “And Vanessa?”
Adrian laughed.
“She’s temporary.”
The internet exploded.
Investors pulled out.
Banks froze credit lines.
Employees leaked documents.
By sunset, Vale Global was bleeding from every side.
Inside his holding cell, Adrian watched the news on a small television mounted in the corner.
His own voice destroyed him over and over again.
Then the guard stepped in.
“You have a visitor.”
Adrian stood, expecting his lawyer.
But Evelyn walked in instead.
He smiled weakly.
“Evelyn. Listen to me. We can still fix this.”
She sat across from him.
“There is no ‘we’ anymore.”
His smile twitched.
“You think your father saved you?”
Evelyn’s eyes hardened.
“No, Adrian. My father taught me how to survive you.”
Adrian leaned forward.
“You’ll never escape my name.”
Evelyn placed one final document on the table.

Divorce papers.
“You’re right,” she whispered. “So I’m burying it.”
