Chapter 9: The Architecture of Secrets

The next morning, the mansion felt different. It was no longer just a refuge; it was a puzzle box waiting to be opened. Evelyn and Victor sat in the security command center, the leather ledger spread open between them. The pages were filled with coded transactions, but the margins contained architectural sketches of the Vale estate.

"Adrian always bragged about the history of this property," Victor noted, tracing a finger over a hand-drawn blueprint of the east wing. "Secret passages from the Prohibition era. I thought it was just the bourbon talking."

"Adrian never talked without a purpose," Evelyn replied, her eyes scanning the intricate lines. She remembered the nights she had lain awake in the master suite, listening to the strange, hollow settling of the house. She had thought it was just the wind. Now, she understood it was the sound of secrets breathing.

According to Clara’s ledger, Marcus Thorne’s entire empire—and the safety of dozens of corrupt politicians and businessmen—relied on a master server hidden within the estate. Adrian had kept it as his ultimate insurance policy. As long as it was secure, Adrian’s legal team was secretly funded by Thorne to manage the appeals. Now that the appeals had failed, Thorne needed the server before Adrian decided to trade it for a reduced sentence.

"He can't just walk in and take it," Victor said. "We have twenty-four-hour security, cameras on every perimeter, and fifty women living here."

"Thorne isn't a thug, Victor. He's a vulture. He uses the law," Evelyn said, tapping a specific date in the ledger. "Look at this. He’s been quietly buying up the municipal debt of the surrounding county. He’s going to manufacture a zoning violation, or a structural hazard claim. He'll get a court order to evacuate the building for an 'inspection.' Once the house is empty, his people come in, tear down the walls, take the server, and leave us with a condemned property."

Victor’s jaw tightened. "So what do we do? Call the FBI?"

"And tell them what? That a battered woman gave us a diary claiming there's a magic box in our walls?" Evelyn shook her head. "By the time they get a warrant, Thorne will have legally forced us out and wiped the evidence."

Evelyn stood up, walking to the window that overlooked the gardens. She saw the women walking together, pushing strollers, tending to the roses. This was their home. She would not let a man like Thorne take it from them.

"We don't call the authorities," Evelyn said, turning back to Victor with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "We find the server first. And then, we invite Mr. Thorne over for a chat."
