Chapter 5: The Secret in the Marriage Contract
The next morning, Evelyn walked into the emergency board meeting wearing black.
Not mourning black.
Victory black.
The directors stood as she entered.
At the head of the table sat Victor Harlan, older, stern, unreadable.
But Evelyn did not sit beside him.
She sat in Adrian’s chair.
A nervous director cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Vale—”
“Ms. Harlan,” Evelyn corrected.
The room went still.
She opened a leather folder and removed the original marriage contract.
For years, Adrian had believed the contract protected him.
He was wrong.
Buried deep in the clauses was one condition he had never bothered to read carefully.
If Adrian used intimidation, coercion, or public humiliation to force Evelyn out of the marriage, every controlling share transferred immediately to her.
Victor looked at the room.
“My daughter did not come here asking for protection. She came here to collect what was already hers.”
One by one, the directors signed the transfer.
By the end of the meeting, Adrian Vale no longer had a company.
He no longer had a mansion.
He no longer had power.
