Chapter 11: The Vulture’s Descent

Two days later, the trap was sprung. As Evelyn had predicted, the foundation received a heavy-handed legal notice from the city council, backed by a shadowy development firm owned by Marcus Thorne. They cited severe structural anomalies in the east wing and demanded a mandatory, 48-hour evacuation for a "comprehensive engineering assessment."
Evelyn played her part perfectly. She filed an emergency injunction, made panicked phone calls to her lawyers, and put on a show of desperate, frantic resistance. By Friday evening, she was forced to concede. She rented out an entire floor of a nearby luxury hotel, moving the women and children to safety under the guise of a temporary retreat.
The mansion was left dark, empty, and silent.
At midnight, three black SUVs rolled through the wrought-iron gates. Marcus Thorne did not send lackeys; the prize was too valuable. He arrived himself, stepping out into the crisp night air, flanked by a team of men carrying heavy demolition equipment. Thorne was a tall, immaculate man, exuding the kind of quiet, terrifying power that Adrian had only mimicked.
They bypassed the front doors, heading straight for the east wing's exterior. Thorne’s men expertly disabled the exterior alarms and breached the side entrance. They marched into the library, turning on high-powered floodlights.
Thorne stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the walls. He stopped dead.
The wall behind the fireplace was already destroyed. The vault door hung wide open. It was completely empty.
"Looking for this, Marcus?"
The voice echoed from the shadowed gallery above. The floodlights snapped off, replaced by the brilliant, blinding glare of a dozen tactical spotlights. Thorne and his men shielded their eyes.
Evelyn stood on the balcony, Victor by her side. But they were not alone. Surrounding the perimeter of the room, stepping out from the shadows, were agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, weapons drawn.
"Evelyn Vale," Thorne sneered, dropping his composed facade. "You have no idea what you're interfering with."
"I know exactly what I'm interfering with," Evelyn said, her voice carrying the absolute authority of a woman who had survived the fire and learned to control the flames. "The drive is already in the hands of the Attorney General. The decryption keys were traded for blanket immunity for myself, Clara, and the foundation. The accounts have been frozen. The shell companies are exposed."

Thorne stared at her, the realization sinking in that he had walked into a meticulously crafted checkmate.
"You broke into my home, Mr. Thorne," Evelyn said softly, though the silence in the room made it ring like a gunshot. "You are trespassing. Officers, get him out of my sight."
