Chapter 11: Breathing Room

The bruises on Elena's skin faded from deep purple to a sickly yellow, and eventually disappeared entirely. She moved into a small, sunlit apartment in a quiet neighborhood in Queens. It had hardwood floors that creaked and a tiny kitchen, but to Elena, it was a sanctuary. There was no cold marble, no oppressive silence, and no fear.

She began therapy, working twice a week with a trauma specialist. Healing was not a linear process; there were nights when she woke up in a cold sweat, her mind replaying the sound of the leather belt snapping against the floor. But during the day, she reclaimed pieces of herself that Julian had stolen.

She bought a canvas and a set of acrylic paints—a hobby Julian had belittled and eventually forbidden. Her first painting was chaotic, a swirl of dark blues and angry reds. But as weeks turned into months, her palette lightened. She painted the sunrise over the New York skyline, a symbol of the new dawn she had fought so hard to witness.
