Chapter 2: The Setup

The plan was set into motion on a crisp Tuesday afternoon, while Julian was tied up in board meetings. Elena slipped out of the penthouse, leaving her tracking-enabled phone on the kitchen counter, and took a cab to a modest, unmarked office building in Brooklyn. There, she met with Marcus, a tenacious civil rights and domestic abuse attorney who had built a career taking down untouchable men.
"He's escalating, Marcus," Elena said, her voice steady despite the slight tremor in her hands. "I can feel it. He's looking for a reason to snap. I need to do this now."
Marcus slid a small, square, black device across the desk. It was barely larger than a matchbox. "This is a state-of-the-art transmitter and recorder. It doesn't just store audio; it streams it directly to a secure cloud server and alerts my office the moment it's activated. Even if he destroys it, the data is already safe."
Elena picked up the device, feeling the cold, hard plastic against her palm. It felt like a lifeline.

"Remember the protocol," Marcus warned, his expression grave. "Don't provoke him, but when it starts, press the button. My team and I will be listening. We have a judge on standby for an emergency restraining order, and the police will be dispatched the second we have actionable evidence. Are you sure you're ready for this, Elena?"
She thought of the bruises she carefully concealed with makeup, and the cold, mocking gaze of her mother-in-law. She nodded firmly. "I'm ready to take my life back."
