Chapter 12: The Stand

Nine months after the arrest, the criminal trial commenced. The media circus outside the Manhattan courthouse was deafening, but inside the courtroom, the air was thick with solemn anticipation. When the prosecution called Elena to the stand, a hush fell over the gallery.
She wore a soft, navy blue dress, looking healthy and composed. As she swore to tell the truth, she briefly caught Julian's eye at the defense table. He looked gaunt, the arrogance completely bled out of him by months in Rikers Island.

Under the prosecutor’s gentle guidance, Elena recounted the two years of escalating abuse, culminating in the horrific events of that Friday night. She didn't cry. She spoke clearly, ensuring the jury heard every agonizing detail.
Then, the prosecution played the audio tape. The sound of Julian's sadistic counting and the sickening thuds filled the courtroom. Two jurors openly wept. Even the court reporter had to pause to collect herself. When the defense cross-examined Elena, they kept it brief, recognizing that attacking her on the stand would only alienate the jury further. She had survived the fire, and now, her testimony was burning Julian’s empire to the ground.
