Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast

Willow Sterling stood beside the center table in her long blue gown, one hand resting against the edge of the white linen cloth.

Two hundred guests watched her husband cross the ballroom with fury tightening every step.

Lucas Sterling looked immaculate in his black tuxedo, yet nothing civilized remained in his eyes.

His mother, Evelyn, waited near the stage with a wounded expression carefully arranged for the cameras.

Ten minutes earlier, Willow had refused to sign a statement clearing Evelyn of missing charity funds.

The Aurora Children's Foundation had lost three million dollars, and Willow had found the transfer buried beneath false medical invoices.

Lucas stopped inches from her face.

"Apologize."

"Now."

Willow heard phones rising around them like a field of tiny weapons.

She also saw fear in the eyes of Celeste Morgan, the silver-gowned auditor who had slipped her the ledger.

"I said no."

Lucas's hand moved before the orchestra could finish its final note.

The slap cracked across the ballroom.

Willow's pearl earring struck the floor and rolled beneath the table.

Her cheek burned, but the silence hurt more.

Nobody stepped forward.

Nobody told him to stop.

A waiter lowered his tray as though even the glasses had become ashamed.

The foundation chairman adjusted his cuff links and studied the carpet.

In that instant, Willow understood that wealth did not create courage.

Evelyn lowered her gaze as though Willow had embarrassed the family by being struck.

Lucas leaned close enough for only Willow to hear him.

"You should have signed."

Tears filled her eyes, but she refused to give him the sound he wanted.

She turned and walked through the crowd while guests divided around her.

Someone called her name.

"Willow!"

She recognized Lena Park, the gala photographer, but Lucas's security chief blocked Lena from following.

Willow crossed the marble corridor and pushed through the balcony doors.

Cold night air struck her bare shoulders.

The city glittered below, indifferent and impossibly far away.

Her fingers shook so badly that she entered the wrong passcode twice.

She called the one person Lucas had spent years teaching her not to trust.

Richard Vale answered on the first ring.

"Willow?"

Her control finally broke.

"Daddy, he hit me."

There was no hesitation in her father's voice.

"Tell me where you are."

"The east balcony at the Sterling Grand."

"Do not go back inside."

The balcony door opened behind her.

Lucas stepped into the blue city glow and quietly closed it.

"Give me the phone," he said.

Richard heard him.

"Lucas, walk away from my daughter."

Lucas smiled as if the warning amused him.

"Your daughter is having another episode, Richard."

Willow stared at him because there had never been a first episode.

Lucas reached for the phone.

She backed toward the glass railing.

"Don't touch me."

He stopped, then glanced at the security camera above the door.

Its red light went dark.

"That depends on what you do next," Lucas whispered.

Richard's voice sharpened through the speaker.

"Willow, I am downstairs."

The line suddenly died.

Lucas held up her missing pearl earring between two fingers.

"Were you looking for this?"

The pearl was split open, revealing a tiny black microphone inside.

Willow had never known it was there.

Lucas closed his fist around it.

"Your father has been listening to us."

Then the ballroom doors locked behind him.
