Chapter 2 - The Balcony Witness.

Willow kept her back against the cold glass while Lucas studied the broken pearl in his palm.

The wind lifted strands of her dark hair across her swollen cheek.

"Why was there a microphone in my earring?"

Lucas gave a quiet laugh.

"Ask the father who abandoned you for seven years."

The balcony door rattled from the other side.

Richard's voice carried faintly through the glass.

"Open this door."

Lucas slipped the pearl into his pocket and unlocked the door with deliberate calm.

Richard Vale entered with two hotel security officers behind him.

At sixty-two, Richard still carried the authority that had built Vale Industries from a failing factory.

Tonight, however, terror made him look older.

He saw Willow's face and lunged toward Lucas.

The officers seized Richard before his fist landed.

"You put your hands on her in front of two hundred people."

Lucas straightened his bow tie.

"She attacked my mother and caused a scene."

"He slapped me," Willow said.

One officer looked away.

The other spoke into his radio and received an answer Willow could not hear.

"Mr. Sterling owns this hotel," the officer said.

"We need everyone to leave the private area."

Richard stared at the officer in disbelief.

"Call the police."

Lucas raised his phone.

"I already did."

Two uniformed officers entered seconds later, followed by Evelyn and several concerned board members.

Evelyn rushed toward Willow with theatrical sorrow.

"Sweetheart, tell them you forgot your medication again."

Willow recoiled.

"I don't take medication."

Lucas handed an officer a folded document.

"My wife has a history of paranoid behavior."

The document carried the letterhead of a psychiatrist Willow had never met.

It claimed she suffered delusions about stolen money and violent relatives.

Richard tore the paper from the officer's hand.

"This is fabricated."

Evelyn touched his sleeve.

"Richard, your family has hidden enough scandals."

Willow saw the threat land behind her father's eyes.

For one terrible second, he became silent.

Lucas noticed.

"Take her home, Richard, and tomorrow we can forget this humiliation."

Willow understood that forgetting was the deal being offered.

She looked through the ballroom doors at the guests who had witnessed everything.

Most were already being ushered toward the elevators.

Some avoided Willow's eyes because they had praised her courage only hours earlier.

Others whispered that a marriage should remain private, even after Lucas had made its violence public.

One elderly donor reached for Willow, but Evelyn's assistant pulled the woman aside.

The speed of their obedience frightened Willow more than Lucas's anger.

This was not one husband's secret.

It was an entire institution trained to protect him.

Lena Park remained near the stage, clutching her camera beneath her coat.

Their eyes met.

Lena raised four fingers, then pointed toward the ceiling.

Camera Four.

Lucas followed Willow's gaze.

Lena immediately disappeared into the crowd.

"Where is the photographer?" Lucas demanded.

His security chief hurried away.

Willow stepped beside her father.

"I'm leaving with him."

Lucas's jaw tightened.

"You leave tonight, and you lose access to every Sterling account."

"Then freeze them."

She walked past him without lowering her eyes.

Richard wrapped his coat around her shoulders in the elevator.

For three floors, neither spoke.

Then his phone buzzed with an unknown message.

The attached photograph showed Lena being forced into a black service van behind the hotel.

Beneath it was a single sentence.

Bring Willow home, or the photographer disappears for good.

The elevator doors opened to the lobby.

Lucas was already waiting there.
