Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence.

Lucas stood beneath the lobby chandelier with one hand in his pocket and victory resting lightly on his face.
Willow knew he had arranged the message before he ever opened the balcony door.
Richard angled his phone away from Lucas.
"Where is Lena?"
Lucas glanced at the guests still drifting through the lobby.
"I have no idea who you mean."
Willow stepped close enough to smell the whiskey on his breath.
"Your men took her."
"My men escorted an unauthorized photographer from private property."
"She was hired for the gala."
"Not anymore."
Richard told his driver to call the police and give them the license plate from the photograph.
Lucas finally lost his smile.
"That would be a mistake."
"Hitting my daughter was your mistake."
Richard guided Willow toward the revolving doors.
Before they reached them, every light in the lobby went dark.
Guests screamed as the emergency shutters dropped over the exits.
Willow felt someone tear Richard's phone from his hand.
Another hand closed around her wrist.
She drove her heel backward and heard a man curse.
Emergency lights blinked on six seconds later.
Lucas stood several feet away, pretending to be surprised.
Richard's phone was gone.
The red mark around Willow's wrist proved the darkness had not been an accident.
"Power fluctuation," the hotel manager announced.
"The exits will reopen after a safety check."
Around them, guests treated the explanation as permission to stop asking questions.
Willow noticed hotel staff collecting phones from several employees who had recorded the blackout.
Each device disappeared into a gray security pouch.
Lucas had prepared procedures for evidence as carefully as he prepared seating charts.
Richard noticed the pouches too.
"This was planned," he whispered.
Willow nodded without taking her eyes from Evelyn.
Willow spotted her missing pearl earring beside a planter.
Lucas's pocket was now empty.
She moved toward it, but Evelyn stepped onto the pearl and crushed it beneath her heel.
"Some jewelry isn't worth saving," Evelyn murmured.
Richard heard her.
"Neither is your family name."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"Careful, Richard."
"Your board still believes your wife died in that boat accident."
Willow stopped breathing.
Her mother, Caroline Vale, had drowned when Willow was sixteen.
Richard had always refused to discuss the missing body.
"What does my mother have to do with this?"
Evelyn's smile returned.
"Ask your father why he paid me to remain silent."
The shutters began to rise.
Police sirens sounded outside.
Lucas took Willow's elbow gently enough to fool anyone watching.
"Come home with me, and Lena walks free."
"You admit you have her?"
"I admit nothing."
Richard shook his head at Willow.
"You are not going anywhere with him."
Willow thought of Lena shoved into the van because she had tried to preserve the truth.
She also thought of the false psychiatric report already waiting in Lucas's pocket.
If she vanished with her father, Lucas would call it proof of instability.
"I'll go home," Willow said.
Richard stared at her.
"No."
She whispered so only he could hear.
"Find Lena and learn what Mother knew."
Lucas led Willow toward a private elevator.
At the closing doors, Richard shouted one final warning.
"The left pearl still works."
Lucas looked at Willow's remaining earring.
She tore it free before he could touch it.

Inside the pearl was not a microphone.
It was a tiny silver key.
