Divers searched the river until sunrise and found Richard's sedan lodged beneath twelve feet of black water.
The driver's door was open.
Richard was not inside.
Blood marked the steering wheel, but the amount was not fatal.
Willow refused to accept condolences from people who had ignored her in the ballroom.
She waited beside Detective Quinn at the river command post.
Celeste returned from Northbridge carrying a patient intake folder.
"The clinic scrubbed its computers before the police arrived."
She handed the folder to Willow.
The patient name on the cover was Willow Caroline Sterling.
The photograph inside showed Lena Park.
"They admitted Lena under my identity."
"They were building a medical history for you," Quinn said.
The file described hallucinations, violent outbursts, and suicidal behavior.
Every entry had been signed by the doctor who brought the syringe to the penthouse.
The earliest record was dated eight years before Willow had ever met him.
The conspiracy had started long before the gala.
Quinn found a discharge address on the final page.
It belonged to an abandoned Vale textile mill outside the city.
Willow recognized the property from childhood visits with her mother.
Richard had closed it after Caroline disappeared.
They drove there with a tactical unit shortly after noon.
On the way, Willow remembered Caroline teaching workers' children to sew holiday costumes in the cafeteria.
The mill had once smelled of cotton, machine oil, and cinnamon coffee.
Richard closed it so quickly after the boat accident that hundreds of families lost their jobs.
He claimed the building was unsafe.
Willow now wondered whether he had been sealing evidence behind its walls.
Celeste found recent utility payments made through one of Evelyn's shell companies.
Someone had kept the abandoned property alive for sixteen years.
Inside, dust covered rows of silent machines.
Fresh tire tracks crossed the loading floor.
Willow heard a faint tapping beneath the oldest cutting table.
Quinn found a trapdoor and pulled it open.
Lena lay in a storage cellar with her wrists bound and a bruise along her temple.
She was frightened but conscious.
"They took the camera," she whispered.
"Did you keep the missing minute?" Willow asked.
Lena nodded toward her boot.
Inside the heel was a second memory card.
It contained more than the slap.
The final recording showed Evelyn ordering hotel security to seize Lena.
Adrian then entered the frame carrying the red metal case.
He told Evelyn that Richard had agreed to the plan.
Willow replayed the sentence until the words lost all shape.
"My father agreed?"
Lena gripped her hand.
"There is another recording."
She explained that the van had stopped beneath the hotel loading dock.
From inside, Lena heard Richard arguing with Adrian through an open window.
Richard had said he would not let them erase his daughter again.
Again.
The word was worse than the accusation.
Celeste found a wall covered with old payroll photographs.
One photograph showed Caroline holding six-year-old Willow beside the same red metal case.
On the back, Caroline had written a name Willow had never seen.
Willow Vale, sole beneficiary of the Ashcroft Trust.
Quinn opened the recovered folder's hidden pocket.
Inside was a death certificate for Willow Caroline Vale.
