Chapter 6 - The Woman in Silver.

Willow stepped from behind the door because hiding would only confirm that Lucas controlled the room.
Adrian's face tightened, but Lucas looked almost pleased.
"How long were you listening?"
"Long enough to hear you plan evidence against me."
Lucas placed the silver key on his desk.
"Adrian, give us a moment."
Adrian closed the red case inside the safe before leaving.
Willow memorized the order of every shelf.
Lucas circled her slowly.
"Your father taught you to mistake suspicion for intelligence."
"My father did not make three million dollars disappear."
"Neither did I."
"Then open the safe."
Lucas's calm finally cracked.
He caught her chin and forced her bruised cheek toward the morning light.
"You will appear beside me tonight and apologize to my mother."
"No."
His fingers pressed harder.
"You will also say the slap never happened."
The study doors opened behind him.
"Remove your hand from my client," a woman said.
Celeste Morgan stood there in the same silver gown, now covered by a black coat.
Beside her waited Detective Mara Quinn and two uniformed officers.
Lucas released Willow.
"You are trespassing."
Celeste held up a temporary protective order.
"The hotel footage shows you striking your wife."
Lucas glanced at Quinn.
"Camera Four was corrupted."
"Camera Six caught the reflection in a mirrored column."
Willow almost smiled.
Celeste explained that she had copied the feed before hotel security reached the control room.
She had attended the gala as an auditor because Caroline's trust required an independent review every five years.
Lucas had attempted to cancel that review three times.
The missing money finally gave Celeste authority to ignore him.
"I was supposed to watch the accounts," Celeste said.
"I should have watched you too."
Willow shook her head.
"He is responsible for what he did."
Saying it aloud felt like cutting the first wire in a cage.
Willow believed it.
Lucas had erased the direct view and forgotten the ballroom was filled with glass.
Detective Quinn asked Willow whether she wanted to file a report.
Willow looked directly at Lucas.
"Yes."
The word changed the air between them.
Lucas had always counted on her silence being stronger than his cruelty.
Quinn photographed Willow's cheek and wrist while Celeste helped her pack.
Lucas was ordered to remain twenty feet away.
He obeyed with the confidence of a man who believed paperwork could not reach him.
In the dressing room, Celeste closed the door.
"Lena is alive," she whispered.
Willow gripped the vanity table.
"Where is she?"
"She sent one image before they took her camera."
Celeste showed her a photograph of the hotel service garage.
Lena's reflection appeared in the van window beside a sign for Northbridge Medical Transport.
"That company belongs to a private psychiatric facility," Celeste said.
"It is where wealthy families hide inconvenient people."
Willow thought of the forged report and the doctor with the syringe.
"They were going to send me there."
"They still are."
Celeste opened her coat and revealed a duplicate silver key on a chain.
"Your mother gave this to my father sixteen years ago."
Willow stared at her.
"You knew my mother?"
"My father was on the boat the night Caroline disappeared."
"He died with her."
Pain moved across Celeste's face.
"He died."
May you like
"Your mother did not."
The dressing-room handle began to turn.
