Chapter 11 - The Vanishing Witness.

Two officers pulled Willow away from Richard while a paramedic began chest compressions.
"I did not poison him."
Adrian pointed toward Willow's blue satin purse on the table.
Inside, police found a glass vial labeled with Richard's heart medication.
The dosage was strong enough to stop his breathing.
Willow had not seen the vial before.
Lucas stood beside Evelyn and filmed every second.
"Please help my wife," he told the officers.
His performance was polished enough to make Willow sick.
Detective Quinn entered and ordered the officers to preserve the champagne glass.
Adrian quietly kicked one broken piece beneath the stage curtain.
Lena saw him.
She rushed forward, but the ballroom lights failed again.
In the darkness, Willow heard a struggle and Lena's camera strike the floor.
Emergency lights returned.
Lena was gone.
The service door behind Adrian swung slowly shut.
"He took her," Willow shouted.
Adrian raised both empty hands.
"I have not moved."
Quinn ordered officers into the corridor, but they found only Lena's shoe beside an open freight elevator.
Paramedics restored Richard's pulse and rushed him to Vale Memorial Hospital.
Willow was handcuffed before she could follow.
Lucas approached as officers led her through the ballroom.
"Apologize, and I can still fix this."
Willow turned her bruised face toward every camera.
"Tell them what you want me to apologize for."
Lucas's smile vanished.
"For lying about your family."
"Which family?"
"The one that tried to declare me dead, or the one that watched you hit me?"
Guests began recording him instead of her.
Quinn placed Willow in an unmarked car and drove away without another officer.
"Am I under arrest?" Willow asked.
"You are in protective custody until we examine that glass."
Quinn unlocked the cuffs at the next intersection.
"Adrian has people inside my department."
Willow rubbed her wrists.
"Then where are we going?"
"To the one place Lucas cannot search without exposing himself."
They entered an underground evidence garage beneath the old federal courthouse.
Celeste waited beside Marisol and the doctor from the penthouse.
The doctor looked terrified.
He explained that Adrian had threatened to expose gambling debts and revoke his medical license.
Lucas then paid him through a consulting company owned by Evelyn.
The doctor had never examined Willow.
He built the reports from private conversations Lucas secretly recorded in their bedroom.
Ordinary grief became depression, disagreement became paranoia, and fear became instability.
Willow listened as the language of medicine was turned into another locked door.
"Will you testify publicly?" she asked.
The doctor looked toward the sealed garage gate.
"If I live long enough to reach the courthouse."
Quinn promised no comfort, only protection and consequences.
He agreed.
For once, fear had produced testimony instead of another silence.
"Lucas paid me to sign Willow's reports," he confessed.
"Adrian supplied the patient histories."
Marisol held out the memory card she had taken from the burner phone.
It contained audio from the penthouse before the fire.
Lucas could be heard discussing Lena's staged evidence and Willow's planned fall.
It was enough for arrest warrants.
Quinn called the judge.
The call failed.
Every phone in the garage lost service at the same moment.
The overhead gate began closing.
A black van accelerated down the ramp toward them.

Its headlights revealed Lena bound in the passenger seat.
Lucas was driving.
